What are everyones opinions of them?
The reason i ask is not because im thinking of using one, but because my 2's Sire has one on for when he is training or been walked in a group, not because he is a constant puller but because he is soo muscular and strong built when he decideds to pull he pulls. My trainer then went on to say if Rocky ( spitten image of his dad ) carries on been the build of his dad then i will have a seriously strong dog who if decided to pull will take me with him and said i may have to use one when he is older. I turnt my nose up at the idea as they look cruel to me.
Hi, if you can get him walking nicely on a lead from now theres no reason he will pull badly as he gets older. In the event that he did then you could always try a headcollar but for now I wouldn't worry and just keep practicing your lead walking!
I wasnt thinking of getting one or anything i think they are very cruel but just really shocked me that there was even such a thing.
their dad walks lovely to heel but only has it for certain situations because of how strong he is ( Honestly the muscle on him is crazy i shall try and get a photo ).
Rocky is doing great walking to heel and recall is brill too! Bella isnt soo good but i have taken rocky for a few off lead runs in a secure field and he is doing great =D
Awful barbaric things that should be banned, in fact until I saw a couple of Ceasar Milan programmes, I thought they had been. As others have said, there are much kinder alternatives that are effective.
If he can't hold the dog without having to resort to violent/painful methods, then he shouldn't have it....Simples!
Good grief we're talking Labradors here....not some massive, strong willed, aggressive breed.
It's a sad day when a trainer has to use such methods on such biddable and relatively small breeds (in comparison to many others). I'd be looking for another trainer if I were you.
Train him to give you his attention when walking. If he is happy and willing and even waiting to give you his attention, he will not be pulling.
If you are seriously concerned about the risk of being pulled over if he does get to more than 30kgs, I would recommend a limited-action slip-collar, a FIXED, not muzzle-clamping head-halter, and a double-ended lead. One end clipped to the collar adjuster ring, one end clipped to the head-halter. Head halter lead-end is slack so that you are walking him on the collar only. If you need better control of him you can take up the slack of the head-halter end so that you have control of his head and can turn (not yank) it back towards you.
I have recently used this combo on a dog-reactive Great Dane (a 'Dog Borstal' failure), so it should provide ample control for any large Lab when needed.
