This is a little premature as I can't do anything til at least September and possibly after... Ideally I would be looking for a lab and LRSE&C would probably be my first port of call.
As of September I will be in my second year of uni and moving into a privately rented house where pets could be a possibility. For those of you who don't know I am at the Royal Veterinary College in London training to be a vet.
The questions:
1. The house next year will still be in central London, in 3rd year we move out to Potters Bar in Hertfordshire. Is it better to wait until we are at Potters Bar or could I look into it for next year?
2. Obviously I will be going into uni on a daily basis but we always get an hour for Lunch and days regularly finish at lunch and I will have housemates so the maximum time to leave the dog would be 4 hours would this be ok? I know Theo and Golds are left for that time I don't know if it differs for a rescue.
3. Which brings me on to meeting my dogs. Obviously the dog would have to come home with me, to Devon, in the holidays would the rescue require it meets Theo (and Golds if he's still around) or would I be ok if I knew the rescue dog was ok with other dogs and we introduced them carefully when I did go home etc.
4. Insurance... Is insurance higher for rescues or comparable? I would want to insure the dog in the case of many major veterinary issues. Obviously I would have enough money to cover basic worming, defleaing and vaccination costs.
Although my course is relatively full on I'm not one for going out lots etc so would have time to put into training etc with the dog and although money is tight I feel I could afford to care for one dog adequately.
Sorry if any of these questions seem stupid I'm just testing getting an idea of whether the getting of a dog would be a feasible option or whether I would be better off getting a rabbit! And obviously I am aware all of this depends on my landlord for next year and the landlord at Potters Bar.
I think the best this to do is address all of the above as and when you are settled, you will then know the routines etc, then when you are homechecked you will be able to say with certainty who and when will look after any dog you may have.
As far as insurance, it makes no difference to the insurance company as long as there are no pre existing conditions you are aware of.

Thanks for answering Nat I had a feeling the general answer would be wait until you're settled but a crap weekend here leads to missing the dogs and these little wonderings start to creep into my mind and I'm not one for being patient lol Will definately be posting for more advice in the future if circumstances allow
Are you able to foster short term as an alternative whilst you wait?

I can understand you missing the dogs while you're studying, been there - have you thought about volunteering at a rescue at weekends? Not sure exactly where in London you are but Battersea has volunteer dog walkers I think and the Mayhew might too. I know it's not the same as having your own dog, but you'd be doing a good thing for rescue and having some doggie company for a few hours.
I can't foster atm cos I live in halls and we aren't allowed pets of any form. It will definately come into my considerations in September if that's a better option than adopting one of my own.
Hadn't thought of volunteering at a rescue though so thanks for that idea Angela. I live in Camden at the moment so am pretty central and willing to travel. And Marie I PM'd Sara last night to try and arrange something and thanks for the offer I'l bear it in mind
When the time is right you could offer to board for Guide Dogs. They have an Inner London team who use boarders. It means delivering the dog to 'school' for the day and picking it up in the evening again. You keep it for evenings and weekends.
Not sure where you are in London but it may be a possibilty.
oo that's an idea also thanks Mippin. I live in Camden and I know some dogs get delivered to the Beaumont Animal Hospital linked to the RVC which is the uni I go to. I always see the Guide Dogs in their outside pens and combined with the vets in patients they wake me up most mornings!!
