We brought a head halti for Harvey, he does not like it, we have tried it a few times on walked he gets so aggitated with it on, and scraps his face on the ground to get it off, so won't be trying it again as he gets upset and so do i.

So i have been looking at the no pull body harness in pets at home, are they any good?, do they really work as well as they say?

Hi,
I've no experience of the no pull harness but I know many on here use a head halti.

There is lots you can do to work on Harvey getting to like and accept his head halti with treats for example - it's not dissimilar to some dogs hating a regular collar as a pup.

This video is actually for a muzzle, but you'll get the idea, the dog quickly sees the new item as a good thing and chooses voluntarily with no struggle.
It's just a case of easing him into wearing the halti.

The Sporn Harness is excellent. We use it in conjunction with lead training.

Basil... thanks for your reply, we have tried everything, over a number of weeks, he just does not like the halti, it was to upsetting to watch him drag his face across the pavement to get it of, maybe later on if a body harness does not work, i will give it another go when he is older

Thanks

bld... i have looked at these, out of interest what size did you get,
Harvey is 8 1/2 months old

Are these harness only meant to be as a temporary think or can they be used permanent?

Hi,
I use a harness on Milo as he kept pulling on the lead.I personally don't like the halti. Since getting it he has been tonnes better walking to heel!I got Milo's from pets at home too. It's from the Rogz range.
Here is Milo wearing his.

Sorry for the humongus pic!!!For some reason it won't resize on this laptop!lol

All of these things - harnesses. haltis etc are designed as training aids not permanent things - my concern with harnesses is that they can alter the gait of the dog and I do wonder might that lead to unusual wear and tear of joints in an unnatural way?

A good dog training club should be able to teach you to teach your furfriend to walk nicely ...

Hi Mandy,

We have a mikki walkright harness, that basically tightens under the front legs when they pull to hard. It really does work, and Truffle has never seemed even slightly upset, no matter how hard he's pulled. But it does give me more control over him.

I did try him in a 'normal' harness, but he was rather like a horse pulling a cart - put all his weight behind the chest strap and kept moving! With this one eventually he stops pulling because it becomes uncomfortable but doesn't hurt him.

We are still doing lots of lead training - he'll walk really nicely if given a treat every few steps Rolling Eyes - but I think that the harness is really helping because he is too strong for me to stop when he sets off at pace!!! The good thing about the walkright is that you can take off the under leg straps and attach a lead to the collar part to see if they will walk nicely, and if they pull you can reattach the straps, if that makes sense - that is how they recommend using it. I sometimes feel that I'm not consistent enough with him, and that is probably a large part of the problem - he walks really nicely for OH, but then he takes no s**t from the dog and is stronger!

Hope you get on OK with whichever you choose.

Cat and Truffle

I use a Halti Harness on Poppy, especially when out walking with Smudge as well because Poppy always decides to pull then. You can clip your lead on top (on her back) or around the front (on her chest) or if you have a double lead then clip one end on each. I find this works really well for the times when I really don't want her to pull me.

Also, because of her hip dysplasia the vets in the clinic recommend the use of a harness if the dogs pulls in the slightest, because pulling can undo all the good work that we have put in over the last 8 months.

I don't use a harness all the time and when we are out for our walks together without Smudge, then I use a half-check collar. We then take time to work on our heel-work.

Smudge is wearing a soft fleece harness as following a discussion at the clinic when I took Poppy there last week, they recommended using one for Smudge - she is a very small puppy and they didn't want any pulling on her neck when she comes out for walks. It won't be a permanent thing though...
