My claim for Coco's pyometra spay is currently with Direct Line awaiting their decision and payment. They said they would cover the op when I rang them on the day she went in, but they also quoted a whole list of maximum amounts that they would pay out for certain things eg. maximum £35 per night hospitalisation (the only one I can remember). They also quoted that there was a maximum amount for various tests (histology, cytology etc) but I can't find these amounts anywhere in the paperwork or online.

I think this is a bit naughty that they don't tell you until you actually make a claim that there are limits and even naughtier that the information isn't readily available. If anyone has any details I would appreciate you posting them here please.

Our claim is for £657 and includes about 6 blood tests so I hope they don't knock any of it back. I will hopefully know by the end of the week.

HI Coco loco, We're with direct line . I'm looking at the policy. What did you want to know? It isn't all that clear but will read through it for you.

Yes, that is my policy too but I have looked through all the paperwork and on their web site and it doesn't tell me anywhere that there are limits for the cost of various tests and a maximum overnight fee for hospitalisation.

I think that is wrong, they should be more open. Once my claim is sorted I think I will ask them for more information in writing, unless anyone else can find it in the meantime.

Hopefully the upper limits they pay for various things are reasonable though. I think my vet charges £25 for overnight hospitalisation, so that would be well within the £35 per night limit. I don't know, but I'd imagine if your vet is reasonable with their prices for various tests etc, that your policy will cover the full amount. Fingers crossed anyway. Let us know how it goes.

I rang yesterday and they have paid £577 which is the full amount after the excess. Very relieved!

I would have preferred it if she hadn't been poorly but it meant that in the end it only cost £80 to have her spayed and I had planned to have it done that week anyway.

I am just about to go through the same battle with direct line!

It isn't anywhere on their policy documents.

My vet charge over their max amount for a hospital stay (£47 v's £35) and for out of hours care (£127 v's £100).

I was only given these numbers when I called to request the form and I'm not impressed.
Will be interesting to see if they pay it!

If it's new they should have written to me with a change of terms - telling me over the phone when my dog needs treatment and I havent the time to find a trusted new vet is wrong.
It may be small amounts they wont pay but it's the principle Evil or Very Mad

I think the fact that they don't publicise these figures is wrong. I would be tempted to take the matter to the insurance ombudsman if you get no joy from them.

I need to write to them asking for a full list of these limits as I am quite sure that it is nowhere within the policy documents.

I am considering looking elsewhere for insurance as I don't think their £6000 per condition maximum amount is a great deal, not if the dog needs a couple of hip operations or similar and follow up treatment.

I've been lucky, I've had two claims and they have paid out in full both times according to the terms on the policy documents. I wouldn't imagine that I have any "pre-existing conditions" that could be excluded now as the pyometra was cured by spaying and will not re-surface unless it comes back as stump pyo.

I called them this morning and asked where it was in the policy document and was told - it's not, we brough it a few months ago and tell people when they register a claim.

I told them I thought it was too late then as people have already incurred treatment and that they are not giving people the option to change insurance for what is effectively a change in T&C.
I told them I wanted it putting on my file that I wasn't happy......so we'll see what happens with my claim as like you say I will take this further.

They told me that vets fees were just getting higher and higher and so theyve taken an average for these charges and that's their limit.
I said 'welcome to the south east' where things do cost more than the rest of the country! Evil or Very Mad

In a way they are right though, Basil was hospitalised in August 08 and that was £47 a night.....it is now £55 and there's less VAT in that now.....that must be more than a 15% increase in a year?

I only renewed my policy as of 30 October. If these new limits have been in for months why wasn't it in my policy documents?

I think this needs to be publicised better.
