When I was looking at insurance a couple of years ago i asked around about them and was told that they were a bit iffy at paying out, so I didn't go with them.
A lot could have changed in thr last couple of years though.
I was with Animal friends for my Collie dog about 5 years ago..he was run over by 2 cars on a dual carriageway (and amazingly came away with only a cut on his leg)..the driver of one of the cars made a claim for his car saying it was written off!! Animal friends paid out with no problems.
I now have a lab pup and have just set up pet insurance for her with Marks and Spencers as that came highly recommended..it is really cheap too..I received an online discount of 15% so only costs just over £8 this is for lifeterm cover and covers each condition for £7000 every year.
This website is great at giving the rundown on the various pet insurance companies and the best policies offered
I do not have a dog as yet (hoping to get a puppy later this year or in 2011). However, I have two five-year-old cats, which are insured with AF.
I had to claim twice for one of them and AF were very easy. Once the forms are filled, I pass them to my local Pets at Home (the nurses kindly do the rest). I have never had any issues with them, if the cat experience is of any use to you guys!
Just had the most horrific premium renewal increase for Fife and am looking around to change. AFI seem really good from what they SAY - but has anyone any experience since these previous posts were written?
My Problem is Fife is 11 years old with a history of Mast Cell Tumours, so if I move company they won't be covered. But if the policy is cheap enough I could put aside what I save in premium to cover any possible further Mast Cells, while keeping myself covered for unseen conditions or accidents.
My existing company want me to pay £ 75 per month, £ 150 excess, and 25% of every claim too. AFI quoted £ 16.77 with £ 69 excess. OK not quite as much cover but at his age I wouldn't put him through any horrendous op anyway.
Also tempted to move the other 3 younger labs, none of whom have had any claims (fingers crossed). AFI offered me £ 4,000 per condition per year, to a max of £ 30,000 a lifetime PER CONDITION for £ 20.66 per month per dog. Or higher vets fees if needed for more premium. £ 4,000 in one year per condition seems reasonable - or it is? I know vets fees mount up horrendously so quickly, but when one has 3 to insure, so do the premiums!
Your comments would be gratefully studied, especially regarding this company.
Animal Friends has some excellent vet fees cover (upto £40k/condition) with their lifelong policies (Superior & Prestige) one of, if not the highest of any insurer, so from that perspective they have a very good offering.
Along with the fact that they donate their profits back to animal charities around the world.
Thanks Greg. I have to say the jury is still out on AF - some of the reports I have read have been none too encouraging. I have just renewed the younger boys with Pet Protect again, & am still undecided about Fife's cover. I have 3 weeks to make up my mind!
I've just had to make a claim through them to get back the £1780 that my dogs operation came to. I didn't expect it to come to this amount and i hadn't sent the request form for a claim over £1000 because of this. I phoned when i got home and explained what had happened and was told to write or email exactly what i had told her. It took 6 weeks due to them checking with the vets that it was a necessary operation, but i got every penny back into my bank account. He was only 6mnths when he had that op and i pay £12.50per mnth and £69exess. I stupidly didn't tick the lifetime box so if his other elbow needs work i will have to save for that and pay insurance. I would have gone for a slightly better premium as well.
