Harry is having a mega mega moult. He started moulting in May but not too badly, could easily cope with hoovering once a day and sometimes if he was moulting a bit less, every other day, However, for the last 3 weeks, he is just a massive shedding monster. I'm hoovering constantly, or wading through a sea of chocolate fur. There is fur everywhere. I had changed his JWB to Bakers (pet shop had run out of JWB) and he's now back on JWB which has improved his tummy but not his moulting. HOw long can I expect this to go on for??? And is a furminator the best way to deal with it? The brush we have clearly isn't doing the job, even though i think we could have stuffed a sofa with what we've brushed off now!
Thanks
gwinny

Sounds like he's in moult then!

I've read that dogs naturally moult massively twice a year as the natural daylight hours lessen and then when they increase. We can mess this up by keeping them in unnaturally lit homes however.

I've found that regularly (once a week at most) using a furminator on Luna considerably lessens the amount of fur wafting around the house. The first time I used it was when she'd been moulting in prep for the summer and WOW! what a lot of fur!

Not tried the furminator myself but have read nothing but good things about it on here, not sure whether the enforced changed of food would have anything to do with the prolonged moulting though.

Some dog will moult twice a year, CJ does usually spring and then again around this time, (he`s not started yet though) others will moult almost all the year round.

How old is Harry now?, he could well be moulting out his puppy fur and growing through an adult coat Smile

Fidgit seems to moult 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

A total exaggeration I know but judging by the amount of hair I hoover up every day it sure seems that way.

Troy is moulting like I have never seen before. His fur is absolutely everywhere at the moment. I mentioned it to the vet yesterday when he had some more blood tests and the vet said he has seen a lot of dogs recently who seem to be moulting more than usual.

I think for Troy it seems worse than normal because he has a lot of skin and thyroid problems. Both of which make him shed his fur. At the moment his skin is in quite good condition and therefore his coat is thicker. I suppose it all has to come out at some point! I just hope our hoover doesn't go on strike. Laughing

We took Poppy to France and she found the hot weather very difficult to deal with initially, but soon acclimatised. However, she moulted in a big way all the time we were there!!!! I have never seen so much hair. Our new French neighbours kindly asked us over to their house and invited Poppy as well (they have a dachshund). Unfortunately they have very light coloured floor tiles all through the house and this just helped to show up all the lovely chocolate hair that Poppy was kindly shedding all over their floor. They insisted it was not a problem, but when we went home later I was out in the garden and saw them both madly sweeping it all up!!! I don't think their dog moults in quite the same way.....

I brushed her daily and must say that her coat has changed, so maybe it was partly her adult coat coming through as well (she is nearly 1 year old now!!!). Anyway now we are back in Wales it will be interesting to see if the moulting stops or at least slows down a little.

He is nearly one, so maybe it is a puppy/adult thing. Bless him. It's fine until he eats it but he did sick some up the other day. Nice.
