Sarah, I made a decision a long time ago, to train my dogs to my right - I did train one dog once to my right hand side and was pretty determinant that it was only allowed on my right. However that, was a bit confusing for the dog as I had other people doing day to day handling like the rest of the family and they were all right-handed Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

As far as I know, the whole dogs on your left thing stems from shooting and the practicality of having the dog on your left as you would carry your gun on your right (if you're right handed person or forced right handed). Now, if I carry my gun, my dogs will just swap side and they do the same if I carry birds or a walking stick. They do that by themselves and it seemed to be much more natural for them as they simply 'get out of the way' Laughing Laughing

You don't get any extra points for a nice delivery so as long as the dog doesn't 'spit' game/dummy out, then it doesn't matter if the dogs sits or not or which side..

Well I heel my Labs on the left, and the Spaniels on the right.

The reason being, I shoot over the Spaniels, and I shoot left handed, even though I'm a completely right sided person.

The comments about dogs having a preferred side, are interesting, I think they do. You can see it quite clearly with the Spaniels, some of them have a noticeable preference for hunting on one side, and you are always having to work hard to pull them across to the "other" side.

Andrew

I've found this thread really interesting, I'm surprised how many lefties there are and I'm equally surprised how apparently tolerant the gundog world is of lefties Smile
