Well I can't answer that one yet Katy, but I soon will be able too .
I am only prepared to travel 2 hours and have put nominations in for 5 Novice Trials so far, two on the 12st Sept which are the first ones. I need to get in early though before Darcy comes in season which is an added problem with a bitch .

Thanks for the good luck, have trialled spaniels for a few years so appreciate the nerves involved, the cheques the entries, club memberships etc but have never competed with a lab and would not have had any intention with Rogan had we not done so well at that mock trial, I knmow they are miles apart but it's given me confidence, sort of
Good luck Di and Jill with the entries, let me know if you get drawn, sure at the moment I have beginners luck, first entry and first run.

Katy
With regard to joining clubs you need to be a member of about 4 or 5 clubs in your area. You need to be a member generally for a year before you can enter their trials. You can however enter their tests or go to their training classes in that first year. You will need to put a nomination in for each of their novice trials and you should get a run. If you don't get in the initial part of the draw for a run there is a reserve list that the field trial secretary will work down as people withdraw. This can be for different reasons, their bitch may be in season or they may have won another novice trial which means their dog is then qualified for open trials and cannot run in another novice trial. Or they might have another run in another trial on that day. Once you have accepted a run with a club on a particular day you can't accept another run with another club on that same day.
Hope that all makes sense - if you need any more information just ask.
Good luck Nicola and Rogan on your first run - remember stay calm - if you dog is a "hot" dog stay at the back of the gallery until it is your turn in line. Once you are in line mark everything - you never know what you might be asked to pick but I am sure you know all that because you have trialled spaniels - I shall be thinking of you.
Kind regards
Sam

" Tell me, how many Clubs do you need to be a member of before you stand any chance of actually getting a run before your puppy is a veteran? And if you wanted to not travel more than, say 3 hours drive away, would that totally scupper your chances of ever, ever getting a run? "
Katy to give you an idea which may suprise you, down here in the South, which is where you are too of course, I put in 16 nominations last year and got 9 runs. Three of those runs were 'night before' jobbies but so that means 6 times last year I was on the order from the draw.... so its not difficult down here to get plenty of runs really. In Novice trials. Opens are a different kettle of fish.
They always scratch about for runners on the Isle of Wight I know in Novice. January is a good month for getting a coupel of runs as people have established in Nov/Decd their dog is not ready, or not suitable, or has won one and secretaries get a long way down the reserves list usually for each trial.
