Ruby loves her rawhide bones, and they're great for keeping her occupied when I need to get on with things.. After I read about the problems some dogs have with them not digesting properly I just cut down how many I let her have in a week. I alternate with proper raw bones and always make sure I'm there to supervise. That way I usually manage to grab the potentially dangerous stretchy bits out of her mouth before she swallows them.

I stopped giving my dogs rawhide when my first dog had problems with a big piece stuck at the back of her throat, many years ago.
Thankfully we were there and realised she was in trouble and I managed to open her mouth and get the rawhide out - and I've not given it since!
For something long lasting to chew on, mine have the Galileo bones which I think are made by nylabone but much harder than the nylabone bones we've bought. I'm not sure if they have a minimum age but Minnie-Moo has been gnawing on them since a pup as it wasn't very easy to stop her using the older dogs' ones.
