My vital signs have returned to within normal range now, but I do have another question (there's a surprise!!)
<<adjusts the spotlight so it is shining straight into Di and Allan's eyes!>>
Soooooo....Fish knows how to sit stop and go back, but not the steering element just yet. So were the exercises where he got 20's just dead-straight-retrieves, and the one where he got 0 involved more handling?
<<<readjusts the lie-detector and observes pupil sizes! >>>
H, now come on... theres no need to turn to alcohol or anything.... I mean..... when we trained today to overcome some of his areas that showed as needing work, he did need 'tweeking' on some of his 200 yard marks, and a little bit of handling of the 150 yard blinds with double (live game) distractions.....

Ha ha! I bet yours didn't fetch you a rabbit for supper yesterday though did he? *smug grin*
I ran Aggie staffy through the pheasant pens, she caught a bun but left it, Wylye went and retrived it for me, to hand, the husband made it into a casserole for dinner.
Hmmm a few very good scores on a test, or dinner in the oven......
Untie my hands first then if you want me to type....
I was away judging the Novice and Open test section when Al was running Fish so he just explained to me (so no, one 20 wasn't from Mummy - grin grin) ....
The three 20's were a mark into water and a mark up a track into some cover. Both which he marked fine and as he enjoys water and his delivery is good out of it, proved no problem hence 20's. The third 20 was a steadiness exercise of two marks thrown, handler picking one dummy themselveas and dog picking the other when handler is back. Again he marked it fine. So no handling.
The 15 was something which needed a bit of handling... and so with no left and right, Al could just stop him and Fish hunted. Hence taking a bit of time to find and a bit of hit and miss hunting out the area so 15.
The 0 was exactly the point here. Fish didn't mark at all, so went out towards the shot but couldn't fine. Al knew where it was, but without handling couldn't help at all and did a 'Jade' and after a bit called himself up! Came screaming back in to be re-sent, as you would, in training Bless his little puppy brain!
So just fun stuff remember. It was a pre novice
The thing being Becs, obviously Fish is 10 months old, just gone. There is quite an avenue between 6 months and 10 months. Also (whispers) the debate has only really ever been about Mouse and when we all spoke on this topic she was 3 and a half months! A lightyear away from ten months.
It was more a socialisation exercise that went very nicely!
To be a bit more constructive, to give an idea, Fish and Mouse whilst bred differently are both from dogs I know extremely well. They both are a show/working mix, with Fish a decent blob more working in there than Mouse... right now Fish is trained three times a week, sometimes 4 for around 15 - 20 mins when its use, and hour with a trainer. He has a one to one once a week with one of our trainers and one other dog (so a two to one really!) and another one to one once a fortnight with our other trainer.
They are pretty much on a six - eight retrieves maximum basis. If thats not an hour then so be it...
Then a bit of practice in between involving a lot of dancing about for a whacked tennis ball and some long long encouraging memory backs and a bit of cover hunting for dropped tennis balls. From about next week a little basic handling will start to come in. Fish is a very naturally steady dog so he can swap between running in, and waiting to be sent very well. Another dog might need a bit more work on this. His heelwork is naturally good. His nose is good. But he can get confused and freeze - or come racing back to your side if he doesn't find quickly (like his mother) hence keeping it all seen... all confidence building and all straightforward.
Thats not what you asked but I thought it might help to outline where we are right now at ten months. Its all individual dependent of course but you would rarely see a ten month old hugely further ahead than that. Thats not a boast, he has his good points and his weaker ones, but because I am fairly sure where those will be we can tailor his training accordingly to avoid setting him back. And my trainers are gods to me and their help is always invaluable! They are both of the get them racing out and back first, then work on real steadiness at around a year, mindset which suits my dogs extremely well.... it may not suit others.

....... well funny you should say that. No. But Deeds did. The only snag being it had been dead since the early 1980's and would have been lovely if we'd wanted 'crispy fried rabbit with maggots on the side....'
Well he thought it was great anyway
Good old 'hunter gatherer' Wylye! Thats my boy. FAR more of a W than his brother Fish! Tip Wylye on a moor and he'd kill it cook it eat it. Fish would trail around with a miserable face with a tin opener in hand looking for a taxi home!

Respect, Helen! OK...here's what I have to offer up:-
Flo caught a mouse down the canal yesterday (and ate it, so no cassarole for us, sadly!) AND a frog. <<<Sit's back down looking gloaty!>>>
Pah- who needs a 20, 20, 20 with a pup still warm from his mother's nest , huh?!
Becs and The Gang
And........ Zorro executed THE most perfect 3 card trick exercise at training on Saturday when all the true-khakis' had ballsed their efforts up big-time and were busy sniggering about having to call in the cardiac-arrest team because Zorro had broken into a trot! So there!!!!
