Picking our puppy up on Monday morning. My only slight concern is something which the breeder has said to me about not letting her out into the garden until after she's had her second injection, as we have a young cat who lives a couple of doors down and sometimes wanders through our garden chasing flies and butterflies.
What are people's thoughts on letting our new pup out at 8 weeks after her first injection? Ideally I'd like to start toilet training outside and if the weather is nice next week, it'd be a real shame for us both to be kept indoors!
I wouldn't keep her indoors. Charlie went into our garden right from day one, and I have a cat of my own who comes and goes, along with all of the neighbourhood ones.
You want to begin toilet training right from the very beginning really, otherwise bad habits could be very difficult to break later on.
It is public land where lots of other potentially unvaccinated dogs go that you should steer clear of until about a week after second vaccines, not your own garden.
All my pups go in the garden from day one. You will bring in just as many germs on your feet and clothes as the pup will meet in the garden, so please don't worry about it.
It is beyond me wondering what on earth the breeder was thinking of giving you such advise, as it's the sort of clap trap Vets usually come out with to cover their own backs .

The first place my pups go when I get them home is in the garden to have a wee etc. I don't let them down away from the house until after second vaccs but I do carry them about in my arms a lot to the shops, school etc so they can see the world and meet people. Good luck with new puppy.
We have cats passing through our garden quite regularly (although less so now we have Rueben ) and he went out in the garden from day one. He had no problems whatsoever and learnt to toilet outside incredibly quickly.
All my puppies went in my garden before they even left for their new homes. It's important for you to be able to start toilet training with your new puppy and particularly to start as you mean to go on - no paper on pads in the house, just take her straight outside as soon as she wakes up, has been fed and other times in between.

Mine went out on the garden before their second jabs, and they also went out and about when I could take them, as long as I didn't let them walk through areas with lots of other dogs around, or where they'd been walked.
When we got Winston @ 8 weeks... he was put down in the garden and he loved it..!! And we spent the afternoon out there... Prasing him every time he went to the toilet! I wanted him to know that toilets go outside from WORD go!
We have cats and foxes that come through our garden. Truffle has always been allowed out, right from the minute we got home, and we've had no problems.
