This is interesting as I've just spent an age trying to get Mole to hold something in her mouth for 7 seconds as the class I go to says she needs to do this to pass her test next week. Are you saying this is a big no no? She's really not keen on holding it as all she wants to do is give it back to me Rolling Eyes

I always wanted to try and train Maj to work but due to allergies we are having a late start, the obedience group for intermediate level needed her to hold for 7 secs and she just wanted to pass it back to me, so the trainer forced her, which then sent her submissive and she is now 'psychologically' damaged hence having to go back to basics and build up her confidence. Sad

Similar thing then, although no one has tried to force Mole to do it yet. All my trainer keeps saying is that she is a retreiver and should like holding things in her mouth Rolling Eyes Not really sure where to go with this one, as she doesn't like holding it, just wants to give it back. Maybe if I explain that it's not going to help her from a working point of view then they'll understand Confused I'll see what they say tonight.

I don't if this would help? Luna holds things naturally in her mouth when walking alongside me, or when greeting me after I've been out for a while without her. Could be a starting point to holding for 7secs?

Have you tried a dumbell shaped toy, some have success with this, but my taking (Maj hope you're listening and not snoring under the table) is that they love to run out and get the item, bring it back and pass it to you, or in Maj's case look at you and wonder why you ain't gonna get it as you threw it in the first place Laughing

Now that is my opinion oly btw.

Once I got Samps holding whilst walking i startedd to stand with my back against the wall or the sofa so he couldnt get behind me and whilst praise and talking in an exciting voice i started patting my chest or shoulders asking him to sit so he looked up and then walked away again without taking the toy from him now I just hold my hand up and he sites and presents no problem.

I did the sock thing with an old dog of mine.
He wouldn' t touch a dummy, but he loves socks and shoes, so we had a game of - I would take of shoes and socks and sling them and he would collect them and bring them to me - I would say 'shoe, shoe, shoe'
One day, I had got to the sock throwing, the shoes had come back and the phone rang, I answered it and after a couple of mins rememered the socks. He was gulping sock down the hatch. I stuck my hand down his throat and dragged it out. The other one had already gone down.
I mixed up a load of stuff to make him sick, I was heaving as I mixed it. He licked his lips and nothing.
I phoned my vet then took him down there, she gave him a jab and said 'stand back, he will vomit straight away' Nothing.
The surgery was in a small village surrounded by a river with two hump backed bridges, so I put him im my van and drove a bit fast over the bridges. Nothing.
We decided to leave it to nature unless he showed signs of not feeling well and it was stuck.
One week later, I went into the kitchen one morning, bare footed and squelch, I stepped on slimey sock.
He did retrieve in the end and did very well, however, in the early days, his command to retrieve was 'shoe, shoe, shoe' Much to the amusement of some judges!
He was never mad, keen on dummies and much prefered game.
This is just a warning about socks. They can be lethal if swallowed. This dog had a cast iron tummy, he later ate - a telephone, a wooden bowl and all the oranges, the door frame, the skirting board and a gear knob. Socks are great, just keep your eye on wear they end up!
