This may be a stupid question, but how do I train Truffle to bring things to me rather than run off with them? In particular we are talking plastic plant labels Shocked . I would like him to bring them to me, as I don't want to chase him round the garden to get them back in case he trips and they get stuck in his throat. His recall is pretty good (he's 14 weeks old) as long as he doesn't have something he shouldn't, or he desperately wants to say hello to that lady at the end of the park Sad . At the moment we don't really let him out in the garden because even with me watching his every move he still gets the plant labels (there are hundreds in our garden so I'm not taking them out) and then runs for it. He does then chew them up into tiny sharp chips, and I'm sure he's swallowed a few pieces. I've tried bribery but he won't swap. I really want to take him out in the garden as I love gardening and feel that it's silly to have him in the house when I'm in the garden. I tried putting him on the lead but he turned it into a tug of war and I didn't want him to learn that pulling on the lead was OK.

Any suggestions? I am clicker training him, if this will help.

Many thanks

Cat and Truffle

Everytime he gets a plant label do a recall exercise and reward him when he gives.

"give" and "come" are 2 seporate commands so need to be taught as such. If his recall is good work on "give" with other things of less value to him and reward every time he gives on command. Then start practicing give on some spare plant labels until he is reliable. I use the command "give" when I want something put in my hand but you could use any word you like, I would steer clear of using "leave" as I usually use that for when I want him to totally leave something alone.

Never chase him (he's got 4 legs to your 2 so he's always going to win that one Wink )

Hope this helps

I can't help with any clicker advice because I have never used.

Bribery won't work cos these clever pups know when you want something and will keep it!!!!

I used to completely ignore Luna running off with something but would grab a favourite toy and would make lots of noise, running off in a different direction - even out of sight for a couple of seconds ie making myself as exciting as possible (running, crawling on the floor, rolling ie strange interesting behaviour!) whilst completely ignoring her. Luna used to either come running after me or would drop the object and come running. Then I would say good girl and would fuss and praise her without removing the object from her mouth immediately. Then any dropping or exchanging of the object was the best thing to happen!!!! ie lots of just won the lottery praise and fuss!!! Luna still picks up and runs off with things she shouldn't, however, I give her lots of praise and ask her to bring cos she is such a good girl and things rarely get chewed now that shouldn't.

Because you have lots of the plant labels around it might be a good idea to use them to teach the OFF or LEAVE command. Luna started learning it at about 14weeks old. Hold the label or a treat in a fist so that pup can smell/see but not grab and run off with it. You might want a kitchen glove to begin with if you think he will nibble your hand. The key is to wait until the pup removes their nose away from your hand say OFF and reward with a treat. If you do this a few times a day and then move onto saying OFF when Truffle approaches the labels in the garden you may find he'll eventually leave them alone - it'll take consistency and patience though!!!! I imagine clicker training this would be possible.

It'll take time but you will crack it if you approach it calmly - whatever you do don't chase because it becomes a game. Easy to say I know!

If you feel the plant labels are that dangerous, then I would remove them, after all if you had broken glass lying around in your garden, you'd swiftly remove it, no matter what purpose it served.

If you constantly remove something from a pup, all that happens is, the object becomes of higher and higher value to them, so increasing their desire for the thing in question and also increasing the likelyhood of them swallowing it, so you can't have it (because obviously you WANT it for yourself). It is also a sure fire way to get your attention....and never forget negative attention is still attention to many dogs Wink

So I think you have a choice....If you really think him chomping on these labels is dangerous, then remove them. If not, then let him chomp on them, as he'll soon realise they are not that much fun after all.
