An intersting thread and quite sad to hear that workers are excluded even when they have plans for a dog walker.
After all people circumstances change anyway, a lady of leisure today may not be tomorrow - AND someone who doesn't work full tine may still go off for the day.
I can see it's a mine field for the rescues and those looking.

One thing that hadn't really occurred to me before is how not-so-great homes might go and get a free ad pup anyway....and in time *may* add to the rescue figures Sad
It's a shame there can't be more of a 'trial' scheme whereby some homes are given a 3month period and then the rescue review their arrangmeents or something, but then I suppose that's unfair on the dog and extra work for the rescue.

I also wonder how people affected by being turned down and of course the people they then tell become negative publicity for a rescue and actually affect their donations locally.

Firstly we have to be careful about making sweeping statements, NOT all rescues turn full time workers down, NOT all rescues refuse to rehome to Older people etc.

I think someone mentioned being homechecked and never hearing back from the rescue, well this can happen, unfortunately its a case of nagging the rescue if you haven't heard once you know you have passed..why?...well, the majority of rescue co ordinators also have full time day jobs and often when they get home their email box is full of requests to rehome, homecheck results etc, the paperwork can be a nightmare, sometimes (just sometimes) you may get overlooked. I know because it happened to me Wink

Offering to volunteer and not hearing anything - yep, it does happen, I know some of you have posted your info on the volunteer section, I do look through this when I have a homecheck or transport request, but sometimes its also quicker to put out a general plea for help. Often than not people volunteer as they see a story that tugs at their heartstrings, then when things need doing, they never come forward again. Unfortunately we don't have time to chase people up, I tend to rely on the same people as they come forward every time, the same as all rescues, you need to put yourself out there, call them, ask if there are any homechecks etc needed.

Dogs PTS once they have served 7 days - The majority of Rescue's have a 'No Kill' policy, the council pounds both contract kennels and council owned do still 'destroy' dogs that have done their 7 days and are unlikely to be rehomed although many are starting to work more with rescue to reduce the number of PTS.

Following on from Natalie's posting as a reputable rescue, I thought I would add my thoughts to this posting:-

As a rescue which I have been involved with for some 13 years, unfortunately we do not rehome dogs to people who work full time. The reason behind this is, this is one of the many reasons why the dog has been given up in the first place. In the current climate we are finding many people are having to return to work full time and of course the dog is not used to being left. It has become destructive, it doesn't like its own company so it is annoying the neighbours, this is just one of many. Therefore we would not place a dog in the same environment.

When matching a dog, we also take into account other animals which live at the property i.e. horses, chickens, dogs and cats. One of the questions, we ask when we vet a dog is what is the dog like with livestock, again if the answer is not very good, we would not rehome a dog to this situation.

I am aware there are many lovely homes out there who could offer a great home, but this is why guidelines are put in place. As a breeder, I do not rehome to people who work full-time either.

Also we do rehome dogs to people over the age of 75, in fact a few years ago we rehomed an older dog to a 92 year old lady. Every situation is different though.

You must ensure that you keep in touch with the relevant rescue, it is an extremely busy time at the moment for rescues with many dogs being rehomed, so it can be overlooked.

There are probably several of you who don't agree with this, but I thought it would be good to view this from a rescue's perspective.
