I've never felt the need to clip Bracken's claws as she does get some pavement walking and that helps keep them trim.

However, she's been in season this past few weeks and her claws were getting pretty long. That coupled with a discussion Jill and Fee were having about claws when we visited the Ettinsmoor gang last week got me thinking that it was time I did a bit of clipping! So today was the day.

I got the first few claws on one front paw done fine as I think I took the dog by surprise and it was over before she had time to squirm. However, she rapidly got wise to what I was doing and started to struggle for Scotland. The more I tried, the more she stuggled and was clearly anxious, so I didn't manage to get them all done.

Will I be able to get her used to it or have I left it too late to start?

Any hints or tips welcome Very Happy

I did Sophie's front paws yesterday for the second time ever. She is now 15 months old.

Same scenario, the first one was fine then as each progressed she became less inclined to let me!

I was putting treats on the floor and trying to get her focused on them. Ended up with:

-rice biscuits
-cheese
-hot dog sausage
-dog biscuit treat

All of the above piled on the floor at once!

Would be interested to hear how other people manage this...

Its really difficult when they have not been done regularly Mo.

You should have said when here I would have shown you how I do Boots. I do his about every three weeks in the evening when he's asleep on the sofa. I am not sure he enjoys it and he will try it on a bit, but he is resigned to it.

With Bracken you will probably only be able to do a few at a time but just try to stick to this and do a few each evening. Try not to stress her, but also don't let her mess you about ie. snatching her foot away. Be bold, firm grip snip snip. Its just practice really.

With our old adult x who came to nail clipping late we did just as Jill, says hold firm, grip and snip.

With Basil we used the 'leave' command as a pup to stop him nudging his paw/the clippers with his nose and after each paw he'd get a treat.

Now he sees the clippers and rolls on his back legs in the air before without asking so I can do them, as he usually gets a bit of kaibble afterwards.
