Hello I hae a chocolate Lab bitch called Coco. She will be 6 months old on the 4th July, but going by weeks she is 25 weeks this Sunday.
I have previously had a Labrador male which I picked up from a dogs home so he had been trainedish beforehand- he was great soft boy, but was also a bit of a scrapper until i had him neutured!!! and he got too old!.
I want to get my Coco spayed, but not sure when to do this. The vet, who has some labs herself, said to wait until she is a little older than 6 months, which is the norm, as she is a little stronger etc.., but I really don't want her to have a season. Can anyone tell me what the average time the first season starts or is this really just not a question to answer as all are different!!!?
Coco is such a beauty and great dog with my 4 children all under 8 years she just loves them to bits. She cries in the mornings when I am up but they are not, so I let her go up to wake them. Coco plays with my youngest 2 children, but then she gets to a time of day where she cries for the older 2 to come home from school .
People who see her can't believe how big she is already she is getting so big, and it just seems to happen so quickly...
She loves to steal the kids toys and she does wreck a few bits, but hey we can cope with that she's only a baby!! She doesn't get the fetching bit yet, she just seems sooooo lazy!!
I look forward to hearing from people with any tips etc.. and this is always most appreciated.
I will not be on her as often as I would like due to having not too much spare time with looking after my family . I will of course try and get some photo's on one day .

All the best

Gill and Coco x

Hi and welcome to LF.

You will get lots of different opinions on when to Spay....myself I always let them have at least one season, as I like them to be physically/hormonally mature before putting them through a major op. The only bitches I know personally who were spayed before their first season have gone on to become incontinent shortly after (peeing in their sleep), so although I know this is always a risk with spaying at whatever age, it puts me off greatly having it done before that first season.

If you want to know all the in's and out's of when to spay, then have a read through this link.....

http://www.naiaonline.org/pdfs/LongTermHealthEffectsOfSpayNeuterInDogs.pdf

......as often you only get told half the story.

Wink

Hi, Welcome to LF.

I had Mambo spayed at 8mths and not had any problem from it, Skittle had 2 seasons and was spayed 12wks later. So far no problems with her.
I guess they are all different!! Smile
