Hi all

I've been reading about Kongs on here and seen one for puppies, Please excuse my lack of knowledge, but is this a toy that you would recommend? Hershey is 11 weeks this week.

Are they good for just giving for the puppy to chew on or are they meant to have things in them? Hershey has 3 meals a day and I'm training certain commands and using a bit of her dried food as reward, do I need to be giving her any extra treats?

Thank you

You don't NEED to give her extra treats but a frozen stuffed kong is a great way to keep them occupied, either while you are busy or while you pop out.

Mine love cheap chicken paste in them and if I freeze it first, it takes ages for them to lick it all out. Very Happy

We have quite a variety of them for Buddy and he likes them as throw toys sometimes because they bounce in unpredictable directions. We pop some of his kibble at mealtimes in a kong, too sometimes and he enjoys rolling it around to make the kibble fall out.

I would recommend a kong.....especially for when you have to pop out and leave Hersey alone.....Bailey loves trying to get the food out

If we know that we are going out and leaving Bailey for a few hours (she's nearly 2 years old) I will use part of her daily food to put on her kong, with a bit of peanut butter to glue it in and plug the end, she loves them Very Happy

I also freeze them, sometimes with banana in or using her food again mixed with a bit of water Very Happy

There are lots of threads about different things to stuff a kong with on here Very Happy

I didn't find the kong all that helpful for my pup when she was the sort of age yours is - she struggled a wee bit to work out what to do with it, and a puppy chew kept her occupied for ages anyway.

However, from about 5 months on I couldn't have been without the kong. I have become a master at stuffing them as tight as I possibly can so it takes her maximum time and effort to unstuff it.... and reduces the time she has to think about chewing door frames and the like!

I've been reading about Kongs too, and was wondering - I see they have a puppy Kong and a red adult dog Kong (and a superdense black Kong) - do those of you who use Kongs for feeding/chewtoys go for the puppy one first?

What sizes did you go for, and is the black one the best bet for a(n adult) lab?

(This is Probably-A-Silly-Question #1 of what will be a looooong list, and I haven't yet found a puppy!)

Cheers in advance, and apologies if it's been asked all over a thousand times. Very Happy

I used the puppy one to begin with and then moved on to the large red ones. I haven't needed to go for the black ones, but some labs do manage to destroy the red ones and need the extra tough black ones.

We have one of these for Gillie (9 weeks)

http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=177&pf_id=6673&co=fr

I put some of his food in the little ridges and give it to him when we leave him alone and he enjoys pulling the food out. I have a puppy kong for him too but I bought a size too big!

Hi... have a little bone shaped kong for Solly (11 weeks) which has space at each end for a small amount of treats ... just right for a pup..... I mainly use chicken (got cats so always have some handy!) or his favourite natures menu treats . When he sees it he races ahead and dives into his crate.. Laughing .the only trouble is after only a few weeks he has almost destroyed it and a new one is on the shopping list!!
