Hiya.
My wife and i have been considering since we have had our lab bitch missy to give another lab a home.
We would get another bitch and spaded, missy i have been told needs to have a season then we will get her spaded to.
The reasons are missy gives us so much love, gets us out with great walks, and a great addition to our family,we have no small children, have a good size secure garden.
As we have searched the web im heartbroken to see so many labs being badly treated, starved, beat, kicked outside.
we would like to get a black lab bitch say a year old so she can grow up and keep missy company too.but mainly to give a dog another chance, love and affection that it may have never had in life, that to show all humans arnt bad.
is this a bad thing to get another dog, we have taking this very seriuosly as we intend to keep the dog for its lifetime
my wife doesnt work, so the longest missy is ever left is a couple of hours.
however we have approached several rescue centres already and told me i cannot have another bitch as they will fight,im not seeking to breed just prefer bitch's.plus advised as missy isnt spaded unable to get another dog,but been advised by my vet to wait a year to let her have a season then get spaded, would really like to get another dog know but coming up to dead ends.
we have a house and secure garden, dog will be insured feed and walked with plenty of love,
surely not all rescue centres are like this, we have been considering buying another puppy but after everything we have read would adore to give another dog a home
any help would be really appreacited
has anyone got any advice please, we are in swanly kent.

goodness, which ever rescues told you that?! Don't answer that. I'm really suprised. It's not something I have come across, ever. Have heard it said about terriers, particulalry the bull breeds but certainly not labs. Definately the labrador breed rescue I have been involved with does not have any such policy.
Have you tried the labrador breed rescues? There are plenty and they cover the whole of the UK. If you give us a rough idea where you are we can point you in the right direction
All of your reasons for wanting to give a home to a labrador are very sound and understandable . It does in fact sound like you will give a labrador a lovely home. Thank you from me for considering this option
" however we have approached several rescue centres already and told me i cannot have another bitch as they will fight,im not seeking to breed just prefer bitch's "
.... you have had some very bad treatment from rescue centres I feel. Now I do know some reascues, possibly MOST rescues for some insane reason insist that all household dogs are neutered, even if you have a male and wish to adopt a MALE, or a female and you wish to adopt a female. Absolutely crazy. You can completely see how they would insist if you had an entire male, but bitch and bitch? Nutty.
Anyway, it sounds from your post that your Missy is just a puppy. If she has not yet had a season? I will guess at her being below a year old?
I can understand completely the temptation to get another bitch now, but Missy will benefit - as will the incoming dog - if you wait till she is at least over a year, and all her basic manners rock solid so she is a good example for the dog you adopt rather than having TWO young dogs charging about together taking their lead from one another.
I do think the policy of not allowing a bitch to come till Missy is spayed is crazy, BUT, I do know that is the way it is with most rescues and so you only really have two choices. Wait. Or buy a puppy. And I can completely understand you wishing to have a rescue.
from what you say about yourselves.............you sound ideal
let us know how you get on and can we see some photo's of missy and your new addition when she arrives.

here's missy,she is 6 months old now,
she is such a happy little girl, full of life and always wanting cuddles
well luck would have it , a dog owner at the training class has had an uwanted litter,of black labradors,
we have offered an 8 week old black bitch lab a home, collecting her tommorow, so nice after all to give a dog a home, this women said she was at the end of her teather.
any advice on introducing them together,i dont want nor will i pay any less attendtion to missy, but want them to share each other's company.
thanks again, just cannot belive our luck that this women wanted to get rid of these puppies
Hello and welcome to you and Missy, and your new puppy. Missy is certainly beautiful.
I can't believe a rescue would suggest that 2 bitches would fight. I've had five until very recently, and now have just four. Only one of my girls has been with me since puppyhood. The others were all ex-breeding bitches, and were rescued by Many Tears in South Wales. They are all very, very special.
Well done to you for making the decision to offer a rescue doggy a forever home. You sound an ideal home for labradors. I hope you have many happy years with your doggies.
gstuart, I am ery glad you are happy about finding a new puppy. Just to be the angel of caution, puppy sales have not been unduly affectd by the recession, so therefore if this woman can't get rid of her litter/sell her puppies then be aware that chances are thats because people looking for a half decently bred, reasonably thoughtfully bred litter have walked away for some of many possible reasons.
That may appeal to you. 'Saving' a puppy noone wanted, so what I would say is please PLEASE get yourself full canine health insurance very quickly. You can get it through one of many many companies I have recently upon recommendation found Tescos to be a reasonable price and a decent level of cover for most things. Just to be on the safe side....
Good luck and your little yellow girl is beautiful!

thanks so much for the sound advice, missy is insured with M & S , took it out that does a lifetime cover ,
picked the new pup up and spoke to my trainer about the rest, he is going to take them as he trains police sniffer dogs, and said he will try them out, great to hear something good has come out of this.
i am going to insure the new pup called her candy, she is going to the vets tommorow and will take out insurance too.
missy wont leave candy alone, took missy out for a walk and giving her plenty of love, carried candy in our arms made sure she didnt come in contact with any other dogs or the ground,
need to make sure missy still gets the same amount of love so she isnt jealious
