Just doing a bit of research, and was wondering if people preferred the buckle collars [not sure if that's the right word, I mean the ones with the holes in] or the snap ones that you just snap in.
Also do you walk them on the collar and lead or walk them on a harness/other but just still prefer one type of collar to another?
Hi,
Ruby is almost 11 months and we have been through 4 ancol buckle collers, not just because she has grown but also because they haven't worn that well where the holes are. I have just bought her a Rogz snap collar in the hope that it will last longer but who knows !!!
I've always preferred the snap collars rather than buckle ones, plus you don't end up with an untidy end that sticks out as with the buckle type collars.
My dogs are all walked on a collar and lead but I use a halti with my collie when we all walk out together, as she tends to pull. I think the Red Dingo collars are great and also the Dapper range, I have both for my dogs.
I also have some Dublin collars which are buckle type but these are more for when we got to the river, or muddy walks in the winter.
My two wear a leather buckle collar, but Orsey has lead attached to harness and Zac wears a halti too. I don't know if I would trust a snap collar on a puller.
But saying that a buckle one came undone on a walk and I had to put an elastic band on to keep the end bit of the collar tucked in!!
The Rogz snap collar I have got has the facility to lock the snap and also double backs on itself through the metal ring so I think if snap bit broke it wouldn't come undone straight away. I got it from PAH but my vets also stock it too.
We've also got a Rogz snap collar with the locking mechanism and the snap going through the ring which I think is a great idea
We take her out intially using a gentle leader, then swap her from gentle leader to collar, then take the gentle leader off, usually in the space of around 10 minutes. Hopefully we'll get the initial pully excitement nailed soon and we can ditch the headcollar totally.
I prefer a nice leather buckle collar with a young or unpredictable (lungey) dog. I've had one plastic clip snap on me and that was only with a small poodell on the end . That said, I do prefer a plastic clip collar simply for ease of putting them on but would only use them on older (non pully/predictable) dogs now.
I never thought about the plastic clip snap type collars actually breaking if the dog pulled too much. I prefer this type because they are quick to take off when Poppy goes into her crate.
Poppy doesn't pull too much now on our walks - we are been doing a lot of lead walking around the streets in our area at the moment and she is beginning to get the idea that pulling means we stop and that can get very boring after a while!!
I like the idea of the slip lead and have actually got one but haven't tried it for a while. I am now using a half-check collar for walkies and find that when I have to correct her the sound of the chain part helps to get her attention.
Also I never seem to be able to find the right size of buckle collar and I agree that the long flapping end of a buckle collar can be very annoying, so I'll keep going with the snap clip ones at the moment until she has grown a bit bigger.
He have sold literally hundreds of Red Dingo (and other makes) collars which have the 'snap' catch and can say hand on heart we have not had any problems with the catches. This is even on dogs we know to be pullers and the collars have not let us down.
