Hi,
Hope you didnt mind me chatting here, but felt so pleased with missy today. now 8 months old
went down to the park, plenty of dogs, people, children, distractions etc,
Let her off the lead thought here we go.
Well she saw another dog in the distance, she was off, i gave the Missy come command which she ignored, i then said NO, with that she stopped in her tracks looked round at me, i gave the command COME, i could not belive my eyes she came straight back to me, i gave her one hell of a fuss.
As we walked around by a river there was a big black lab and a staff, i let her say hello, i was chatting to the owner, 3 ladies were coming towards us with 3 push chairs, i gave the NO command followed by COME, she came straight back sat next to me, with all the other dogs running around she stayed next to me.
After that a group of other dog owners had formed, with at least 10 dogs and Missy off in the distance, i noticed she had picked up a tennis ball, i gave the COME command, she came straight back to me dropped the ball to throw,
Well i was nearly in tears, i know its sad but was so proud of her, she really has come along way since letting her off the lead.
Please excuse me for rambling on, but i even shouted stop to her in the distance and blow me down she did,
Wonder if it was a fluke, or she is finally getting what i wish her to do,
thanks again for listening me going on but am on top of the moon
as always
all the best
gary

Oh wow! Pleeeeeeeease could you sort my Luna out. She is HOPELESS around distractions. She stopped and waited when I spotted the jogger coming towards us through the trees of the wood (normally completely deserted at 8am on Sun morning but LOADS of them having a race this morning ) but just so that she could coil those springs and run REALLY fast towards him. Completely oblivious to me!! Grrrrr! Back on the lead she went and we left the woods to the runners
We're working on it! If she's at the side of me we're ok cos I can keep eye contact but when she's off sniffing in front of me like today then the strange person approaching looking at her and running towards her is FAR more interesting than me!! Oh well! No harm done, she just wanted to waggle dance around and run with him!
Is good to hear of your success and my story can make you feel even more proud of yourself!!!
I started training her the day i brought her home, now 8 months later i've managed to get her to do the following.
Sit next to me, putting her food bowl down she will sit, not touching until i tell her too, i can make her leave it on command, put my hand or face in her bowl with no growl or show of teeth.
Brush, check her mouth and the rest of her body.
The following im working on to get 100 percent is, lay down, come on every command, sit and stop at distance.
Today i was over the moon with her recall, i know that there will be times when she says on your bike, but hopefully if i work on it she wont.
When i come home from work after my dinner she knows its play time, do my training then, i use my other pup candy as training.
I have put it down to this forum where i have read what other people have done, stuck with it have i must admit shouted at her a few times but seeing her face change made me very sad and knew i was going to loose her trust very quickly, one thing i've never done was to lay a finger on her, by god been close but knew thats not the answer.
When she ran away once and totally ignored me i ran in the opposite direction keeping an eye on her, then when she ignored me i sat on the floor, she came running back, i think that was the start of her realising
i wasn't the bad guy.
After this occassion when she ignores me on the come command if i run in the opposite direction she would come on a 100 percent recall.
just getting her 100 percent on the come command, but after today i think i am around the 80 percent or maybe im rating her to high.
I know i still have a long way to go but today was fantastic it has given me a glimmer of hope also noting i now she can do it.
thanks again so much for all the great advice on this site.
Plus seems strange but tonight she hasn't left my side following me every where, could it be she accepted me as top dog.
Well done Gary! You have achieved in 8 months what many of us dream about! I know I do. All I would say is dont be too disheartened if 'tomorrow' she goes totally the opposite way and ignores everything you command.
I have learned one BIG THING from this forum........our faithful labs are not conducive to keeping up their once good deeds. Some are lucky (and I hope you are) but my lad was brill when he was a pup..he's a teenager now and boy oh boy what a difference.
Youve done everything right (we didn't) and I truly hope you have a well trained dog there without too much effort. On the other hand////////// welcome to the 'normals' if you don't
Only today Max was brilliant during his morning outing..........but tonight.total nightmare!!! and he has always accepted that WE are top dog.
thanks, i must admit she made me really laugh today as when i took her out again today on me giving the command COME she came past a picnic got given a tip bit, then carried on coming back.
Came right by my side sat down and looked at me with a cheeky grin,
10 minutes later she met another lab , tried to recall her she totally blanked me say ing YEH RIGHT I DONT THINK SO , lololol
After the lab had gone she was 100 percent recal every time.
Im very proud of here, i know i couldnt have done it without reading these posts and getting great advice.
The little black lab candy, i have let off straight away and it seems alot less stressfull, got some biscuits and some cheese, rattle the container and she comes back every single time, cannot belive my luck sometimes.
Does anyone ever find that when there dog goes to jump up somebody you say OFF and they say dont worry their ok.ggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
A dog owner said he felt offended as when candy was off the lead i gave the command NO not to go over to the other dog and stay to heal, i just told him i was training her not to run off as when she is older she will be a lot bigger and heavier, if there is a small child around candy would flatten or even break a small childs bone.
He said i was being rude and not a socialble dog walker, charming.
