Oh - and just a quick plug for Oldies Club - if anyone does order anything from Vet UK, could you please go via the link here:
http://www.oldies.org.uk/?page_id=534
(just click on the Vet UK logo on that page) as then we receive a donation for each purchase (except for prescription stuff I think) Thanks to those that already use it
Thanks yet again Barbara - this website gives more info than the one I found.
Luna's been taking the glucosamine etc for almost 4 weeks now - I got no instructions with the tablets (and they would've been in french/flemish anyhow - I'm not that good at the languages!) so I'm not sure whether she's on an initial high dose or not.
I see most of the alternatives say take an initial double dose for a period then switch to maintenance lower dose. Gonna have to ask vet about that!
Luna's only a year old at the moment and the first lot of xrays taken showed probable ED and a hairline fracture in one of the 'arm' bones - more xrays in about a months time to see how she's doing and responding to rest/medication. I guess she could be classed as a serious case at the moment.
I think I may print off details of these suggestions and take them along to the vet.
Lesley - I had never considered using meat spread/pate to hide things in - the worming tablets go in a piece of hotdog in the manner you described! I think I'd have to quarter these tablets to hide them so I'll stick to powdering; however, I'm sure I'll use the spread/pate idea at some point in the future! Thanks!
Thanks John! - taking it like a sweet sounds like a relief!! I'll be checking out your link!
We tried some tablets at one point that were labelled "chewable" and meant to be really tasty and could be given to the dog like you would a treat - my dog that will eat cat pooh and goodness knows what else, wouldn't eat them unless I broke them up a bit and put them in her dinner
Thanks Angela!
About to stock up on the worming tablets so will go through oldies.
I've found our vet out here in Belgium is more open to options outside of her suppliers than the UK vets.
MUCH cheaper too in our experiences so far - 200euros all in for spay, 90euros for 2elbow xrays, 30glucosamine tabs and 2wk course of Metacam! And she's an excellent English speaker fortunately!
Schafer our GS got Glyco-flex 3 today from the vet. OH gave it to him to and he scoffed it with no probs, we thought it would have to be hidden in cheese
Glyco-flex 3 got the go-ahead from the vet today - Luna wasn't interested once, spat it out 2nd, I ignored her a while and she crunched it all up!!
Yeeeeeeaaaah!!! No more powdering!!!
Vet took a look at Luna today 6weeks after initially checking her over. She says her front legs are too short compared with her back legs so that she'd never make it in the show world (waggiest tail/lickiest tongue only planned competitions) as she walks funnily - although doesn't limp (no head bobbing).
We need a couple more weeks rest and then can slowly start to build up to 2x20 min walks a day rather than the longer old walks of 45/60mins. We need to go back at the slightest limp or discomfort. No more anti-inflams. We'll see how she goes for a spell. If things stay ok, then ok!!
An ok day for us!! Counting down to walkies!!!!! (no matter how short!)
Thanks for all the glucosamine recommendations!!!! Hopefully (touching wood) we have a tasty one!!
Did the Vet make it clear that this is not a medicine but just a nutritional supplement?
I find it fairly disgusting that Vets collude to peddle this stuff - there are no decent large scale trials that show any benefits to joint health from consuming Glucosamine with Chondroitin despite what many pedlars websites try to maintain.

I am quite happy knowing that I am giving Luna a supplement not a medicine. She's been taking the supplements since May last year now, she's been wearing a bioflow collar since then too and touch wood no limping, no abnormal stiffness and all for what in my eyes is a very small price. At the moment 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' I'm not going to change any routine. She may be fine if I stop giving her the supplements but why test that when it's not necessary to.
I've got a science-y background and am quite aware and understanding of the limitations and restrictions on medical trials. As far as I'm concerned all any person, vet, doctor, pharmicist, shop-assistant, ....... human can do is make decisions based on the information they can find whether it be word of mouth or scientific trial. All information has it's assumptions and risks which need to be weighed up for the individual's situation.
