Hi. I use to have Angel insured with E&L, when she needed vet treatment the bill was around £400 and we had to pay the vets and claim it back, which by the way took nearly 6 months.

We swapped to Direct Line as they paid the vets directly. Last week Angel was unwell and the bill again was about £350 when I asked the vets what I did about getting the insurance to pay them I was told that it was Practice Policy not to take payments from insurance companies and that I had to pay it and claim it back from Direct Line. Hope that helps!

Thanks everyone. I still find it a bit scary that should anything happen I may have to pay upfront, but at least I'm prepared for it now.

I'll keep those credit cards safely tucked away!

Mostly we have paid the vet and then claimed from Petplan. I keep a separate credit card to do this - Monty has had quite a few claims!!
When we went to the AHT I had to give them a cheque for the £65 excess and then they claimed the full amount direct to the insurance company - and subsequently refunded the excess back to me. The hydrotherapist used to claim direct too for the complimentary treatment.
But the norm is to pay the vet and then claim.
