Are you saying that there were black pups in a yellow/yellow mating? Yellow bred to yellow can only produce yellow! There can be no other colour in the litter!!
Saxaphone Joker, Might been breed at Saxaphone gundogs in Durham
Pam
REALLY???? So close to us and Max's grand parents. Thanks for that Pam.

Thats the thing, I am not sure about one of the Grand parents - Apple Blossom Amber - being the query.
It would appear that Sire : Willowyck Yellowhammer is Yellow (but he is from FTCH Lafayette Tolley - Black) but the Dam is Apple Blossom Amber who from the name I assume to be 'brownish' as I cannot find any info on her.
As you say its impossible to get black from two yellow and thats why I was 'digging' a little. And of course that is assuming the foreign pedigree site has the correct information on Yellowhammer (but the name kind of agrees with the Yellow colour too)

saxaphone gundogs is just outside of sherburn and is owned by peter burton , he has a website . This is where we got roger from but although there are plenty of saxaphone in his pedigree no joker , but if you email them am sure they would help . I am no expert on breeding but i always thought you could get a black from two yellows as long as one of them had black in their line . hope this is of some help .
Just to clear up that FT.Ch Lafayette Tolley was Yellow! and not black as stated in BossMax's (Irene) post - For those still in doubt, there is a lovely picture of him in Nigel Mann's own book at page 89

Sorry about that............think I was getting a bit mixed up with my typing also many thanks to proudy and matt for their info. which I have noted down on the pedigree.
Its those two grandparents on his mums side that are the 'strange ones'. Their names suggest NOT black but as I said, his mum was black and Max's siblings were all black. His dad (Oshkin) was definitely black - got a pic of him. Thanks everyone for their help, all your information helps me piece it together a bit better but I'll keep 'digging'.
Forgot to say that because of the comments from Matt, Natasha and John way back in this topic, I have bought the 1998 Champtionship dvd for hubby for Xmas (along with John Halsteads Advanced dvd), so that we can see 'the legend' Captain at his best.
Im looking forwad to seeing it too as we have never yet been to trials or a shoot and it will be good background for us.
Many thanks for your input throughout this topic so far. I do really appreciate it.
What an idiot I feel. As you know I've been trying for some time to check Max's pedigree on his dam’s side and it wasn’t until I was having a big discussion with OH about what I had unearthed that he said "His mum was not Black - she was Yellow!!!" Why on earth I had it in my mind it was the black dog I do not know, as I only went on the final 'pick up' to get Max when the breeders 2/3 dogs were in attendance. OH and son went earlier and met the dogs/owner in greater detail.
So the other day we were walking him in the sun and as it hit him a gorgeous auburn band appeared down his back. We had noticed a bit of auburn around his 'bits' before so I tried to dig a ltitle further with that secretive side of his pedigree. Now I have found – and I am almost 100% sure, that his grand mothers mum was a brown show breed (copperbeech kestrel) and his grand mother was a show dog! But then mated to Lafayette Tolley, I would imagine to bring things back round to the FT lines which seem more prevalent further back.
We always knew he was larger than the average FT dog and suspected some show in him somewhere because of his size and strength. I found this really weird that this transpires after reading the recent topic from John on the Dual Dog in Breeding.
I know I’m biased, but I do love the size, build and looks of Max and I know Di and a few others are keen on the mixing of the two lines back into one, so I was quite pleased to get this glimmer of a clue to his background.
One thing struck me when trying to find out about his mothers side. Most of the tests done on the dogs that ‘appear’ to be of show background, only seem to have eye tests listed – no hips, whereas all the FT dogs almost all have both?
