I read the Drakeshead post with interest as I was asked at the recent NE training day as to whether Max was a Drakeshead? No idea I said. I did check and he has Actor of Shotgate in there but GGG father. Since looking on here further, someone mentioned Willowyck dogs. Yellow Hammer is Max's grandfather.
I keep coming up against his fathers name all over (but he's not a champion - I dont think) but its a lovely name - well I like it - Oshkin Amarok (and I know amarok means wolf) His father is apparently a very famous champion Garendon Captain and his mother was Saxaphone Joker.
Most of the champions seem to be on his fathers side and I have to go back 4 generations to get them on mums side (sorry dam )
Apparently Garendon is know as being a very headstrong but brave dog - apparently running through a barbed wire fence to retrieve ........now that sounds like MY MAX.
Would be interested in any stories/information on any of the names.
Cheers

Garendon Captain won the 1998 Retriever Championships. You can watch it on DVD available from Paul French video. He ran a fantastic trial to win, and the second place bitch FTCh Lochmuir Bonnie did plenty enough to win in other circumstances.
Captain was bred by Doug Groom. He was sired by FTCh Swinbrook Twig (who achieved a second at a retriever championships) and out of a bitch called FTCh Munro Tess.
In the same litter as Captain was a bitch called FTCh Garendon Cassie of Ropehall, herself a succesful trial dog. She threw some good trialling dogs including FTCh Ropehall Star, before being sold to the United States.
FTCH Munro Tess, was an extremely succesful brood bitch. When mated to FTCh Tibea Tosh she produced the brother and sister FTChs Morayglen Max of Flyline and Morayglen Megan of Millbuis. Tess also produced other FTWs that can be seen in many pedigrees.
I watched Garendon Captain at the 1999 Championships, and although he didnt get as far as the previous year, he greatly impressed me with his drive and hunting. He was a big, black dog with a bit of roughness to his coat. I've come across a few of his offspring and they generally have plenty of drive.
Arguably the most influential of his offspring has been the bitch FTCh Glenpatrick Eve. She achieved second place at the championships, and has also gone on to produce a number of different FTChs and Open trial winners from different stud dogs. She was the top producing bitch at this years retriever championships, and her offspring run under the Levenghyl prefix.
Glenpatrick Eve is my Sky's Grand-parent on Dam's side. It's good to hear about family connections and I find the stories/anecdotes etc from those with such knowledge really interesting. So thank you MattA99 and others who know their stuff and keeping the info. coming! Lynne
Matt, I can tell that you too have a 'soft spot' for Captain My bitch is out of Captain and she doesn't stand back for anything and she's got the same rough, slightly curly ( ) to look at coat as her dad. Lucky for me, she has Kenue Fir as her dams sire plus the whole dam side is a tat more 'soft' compared to Captain which makes her controllable She's the sort of dog that you can sent across a river and push back and she will hunt out that other side meticulously for shot game bringing every single bird back.
I often look at her and think that she was 'wasted' on me as I only managed to run her in a few tests yet the trial boys kept pushing me to trial her as well. I just hope that she has been happy with her life as a gamekeeper/picking-up dog - I've certainly couldn't have asked for anything more!!!!

She sounds lovely Natasha! Just the sort of dog I like to work with.
Another Captain daughter that I rate very highly is a bitch called Kinderton Black Pepper. She must be one of the best working test dogs in the Midlands, and I'm sure must cost her owner a lot of money in trophy engraving fees!
I've got a feeling that Oshkin Amorok sired a Delfleet dog that Mary Darton runs. (something like Delfleet Gizmo of Westernash?) I've seen that dog in both trials and training days, and he's a great natural gamefinder.
Thank you so much Matt for that anecdote about Captain. Max is a very proud, intelligent lad and doesn't like to stand back! You get the best out of him by 'happy' training.........he just gets his back up if someone tries to bully him and is pretty stubborn in that respect, but otherwise is an absolute pleasure to have as a pet and in the main - train.
He has an 'air' about him which seems to fit in with the background, but is extremely loyal.....and knows his place and has the wavy back too.
Am I right in thinking that Oshkin (Max's dad - sorry sire ) didnt do competitions? Is he purely a stud dog?
I was correct, it is Delfleet Gizmo of Westernash.
Oshkin Amarok must have been trialled at least a couple of times, as he has a stud book number indicating that he was awarded field trial awards.
