just a word of warning, vets, supprisingly are not trained in nutrition, so although they treat and diagnose issues which may be associated or caused by diet, they are not necessarily always totally uptodate with all the research or available feeds. Unfortunatley many will have a 'pet' brand, often hills, which they default to as their recommended food, which of course you can buy from them ..... however there are also some well informed vets out there, so just bear this in mind when discussing nutrition with your vet.
e.g. dylan has an intolerance to chicken, if I had followed my vets advice I would have been jumping from one brand of feed to another, specifically his supply of hills canine ID a chicken based very expensive feed full of lots of chemicals etc., instead I did a lot of researching information for myself, and using one brand of food, and varying which type of ingredients dylan ate isolated the offending ingredient as chicken....I would never have achieved this folowing my (VERRY good vets advice) now dylan can eat what he likes within reason just no chicken incidentally gemmas vet sells burns

Thank you Dylansdad for the info on Naturediet. I had made up my mind before getting Murphy that I was going to put him on Naturediet but I listened to the advice of our dog behavourist.

Hi Cristina
My friend uses Royal Canin on her lab and has had no problems. I have noticed that he sheds more and has more ear wax than Treacle who is fed on Burns. Apparently RC is very high in protein. Her dog is gorgeous, but massive. He was 32kgs at 6 months.

Hi everyone, thank you for all your replies. I have since done some reading from some previous posts and I definitely don't want to feed my lovely Kyra some food that is going to make her grow too fast and risk to encourage hips problems and most of all a company that does animal testing. I am appalled that animal testing is still allowed! Sorry, don't mean to get heated up or offend anyone. I am very keen to get her onto Burns or Autarky. I just don't seem to have seen Autarky listed anywhere as a recommended company who doesn't test on animals. Also I want to make sure the food I choose is the right one for the right and healthy growth for labradors.
I am so confused, I know many of you use Burns, NatureDiet or Autarky, and I also undestand that some work for some dogs and some for others, but where do I start trying? I don't want to upset Kyra's little tummy changing too many times...
Help!

Hi Christina
If you email or phone Burns they will send you some free samples, mix this with her normal food sort of 50/50 and see how she fairs on it, I have to say its the best switch I made.
Also Burns can and will advise you on which one is best for your pup.

I feed burns too - Ruby was on Pets at home own brand when we got her. Its a minefield I know and I totally understnad your confusion. I opted for burns as you can buy online.
I just went for it and bought a 15kg bag and have never looked back. Ruby is 18 weeks (today yay) and weighs just over 9kg - she is little though at only 15" from floor to back.
The volumes of burns are lower than poor quality food - less filler so Ruby was only on 80g PER DAY @4kg when we first changed her over. Are you going to keep her on the food she is used to for a week or so? I was advised that and Ruby didnt once get an upset stomach the change from the breeders house to yours is very unsettling and a change in food straight away may unsettle her tummy.
Ruby has gained a steady 0.5kg each week since getting her (apart from this week when she has been poorly ) and has a very sparkly coat - which only started sparkling after cahnging her food.
If you do go down the dry food route I can recommend soaking the food first - Ruby was SO excited by life that she would forget to drink much and at least if the food is soaked then I knew she wouldnt dehydrate.

Hi Vicky and littlelab, I will email Burns for the sample, and yes Vicky I will leave her to settle for a week or so. She is not too crazy about food at the moment as I can imagine she is still a little bit disoriented after the change of home. Lat night she slept beautifully again until 6am this morning, when she woke up very lively indeed! She was fed 4 times a day but I think I might start to feed her 3 times. I will keep you posted on what I do. Autarky seems very appealing too, I will ask for samples from them too...
Many thanks again for your help!

Crissi,
so pleased you took time and effort to read up on whats what, your choice in the end which you go for. Burns is good because it doesnt have maize, totally holistic and lowish oil, autarky is good because its vat free and has higher protein, but has maize and high oil (it is a working mix, just means you will have to watch weight) lol.
Good luck with your decision, as mentioned soak the food with plenty of warm water (with mine I put 1 cup feed with 1 1/2 cups warm water) then wait till the waters completely soaked up and feed has cooled.
