When I had my Weimaraners I was known as the girl who did the brilliant heelwork with them (and still remembered so I am told) because I decided when everyone told me that they couldn't do heelwork that I would prove them wrong, and I am talking Obedience standard heelwork here (my Weimy dog got a 4th in a Novice Test at a Champ Obedience Show which was pretty much unheard of at the time).
I practiced my footwork while vacuuming round the house and we did all our heelwork to the tsh tsh sound of the music that I had playing in my ear the whole time we were practising the real thing.
I have to say I still enjoy it and all my dogs are pretty good (Pepper is probably the one that is not at my high standard at the moment). If you enjoy it the dogs will enjoy it. Although it doesn't actually have to be that good for gundog work .
You've given me a couple of ideas too to help jazz it up a bit. I'm liking the music and maybe a bit of housework plus heelwork - killing two birds with one stone so to speak. Like it!
Yes heelwork can be fun , really it depends on whether YOU want to make it so. Jill has hit the nail on the head, it is down to the handler and their imagination, keep it light and rewarding and your dogs will want to stay with you !
Yes, Yes, YES! Absolutely! Once you've start adding a few twirls and spins, then some weaving in and out of your legs, got the dog walking backwards and maybe add a few 'rollovers and play deads' for variety, it can be the best fun ever Helen! Then all you have to do is choose your theme and costume, set it to music and you're away! Enjoy Helen, Enjoy!
OK Becs, I see where you're coming from. So I'm thinking Musicals, I'm thinking country, I'm thinking OKLAHOMA!
With such stirring scores as 'Oh what a beautiful morning', 'The Farmer and the cowman' and 'The Surrey with the fringe on top', it's bound to get us jigging and jiving as one.
So without further ado I'd like to introduce:
The independent spirited farm girl that is Laurey Williams
AND
The mysterious and dangerous farm hand loner, Jud Fry
I shall play Laurey's aunt, Aunt Eller, a respected community leader (don't you know!). Perfect
