ok as many people will know we are looking for a new rescue and have been looking at another breed <spotty dog> we have a Male lab the rescue we have approached will only consider us for a bitch.

is having 2 boys together really always a bad thing? ~ I really wanted another boy

I think it depends on the dogs. There are plenty of people that have two or more male Labs with no problems at all but I know of several people that have two male Terriers and have awful problems.

Is your lad a submissive sort, as if he is then you shouldn't have too much trouble bringing in a Spotty boy. However if he is the type to stick up for himself or try to control other dogs then you could have problems, especially as Dallies (I presume you mean a Dalmatian when you say Spotty) do have a tendancy to be rather dominant.

Did you specifically as about the male Dallie, as that could be why they said you would be better off with a bitch? Or was it a general "We'll only let you have a bitch because you have a dog"?

our current dog is the most submissive dog ever without being meek if you know what I mean.

We called to ask about a specific dog <well my other half called *eye rolling*> and the lady said she would recommend a bitch because we have a dog so we would be much better with a bitch.

the reason I was asking is I know lots of people with 2 males and they are fine

also the only Dallie bitch I know was the most Dominante dog I've ever met *G*

I have four boys (3 un-neutered) and they are fine together! Very occasionally Alfie and Bomber will have "words" but it is never more than a little grumble at each other, normally when one has a bone and the other wants it!

Biggest problem in my house is between Daisy and Leo!

Hope to help

Vicki

I think if you are set on having another male then speak to the rescue concerned and explain and see what they have to say. I know many people with more than one male dog (all sorts of different breeds/crosses) so it can certainly often work out just fine. There are plenty of people on here that have more than one lab of the same sex.

I've not owned a Dalmatian but I do have two males, I have enjoyed having a mix. Max is ten and my collie is nearly ten, so they're similar in age and also in size.

Not sure about Dalmatians in particular but there are plenty of rescues that will rehome another male provided the dogs get on, so it's definitely not a general no-no. I can understand the logic in a rescue suggesting a male/female pairing (providing dogs are neutered of course!) too, but there's no reason a male/male or female/female can't work. We have had both.

Dallies do have a reputation for being dominant but usually a dominant bitch will not attack a dog, whereas a dominant male may well do even if the other dog is submissive. I wonder if the Dallie has a specific problem with other male dogs, which is why they told your OH this. Confused

Maybe it would be an idea for "you" to ring them and ask in more detail the reasoning behind what they said, as (knowing what my men are like for not listening properly Wink ) it might be that your OH missed a bit of the info or has got it a bit confused. Wink
