I have used check chains in the past and would use them again if i had a puller. I was taught by Richard Duckworth who was trainer at the GDB at Leamington Spa. The dogs had to be over 6mths and he used to get us to take off the dogs leather collars as the check chain can't work properly with a leather collar on as well. As long as they are put on the right way round they shouldn't hurt the dog. I used to be able to loop the collar and lead and my dogs would just slip their heads through, so if they were that nasty the dogs would have run in the opposite direction, in time they went back to their leather collars and walked as good as gold. I had to do something as I was only 7st and only 5ft 1" tall trying to walk 2 full-on dogs, lab & springer was a nightmare, so I joined his dog-training classes which were held in Stoneleigh Village. Within 6 wks walking the dogs became a dream not a nightmare.

Laughing Laughing count me in Laughing personally, I would rather see a dog on a check chain than hauling their owner along the street on a lead and collar Rolling Eyes

Coming back to Jules point, I do sometimes think the age you introduce them can have an impact with some dogs as well - "Old dogs, New Tricks" spring to mind. It is the only area I've ever really struggled with Hally and hence walking her isn't as pleasurable an experience as taking out any of the youngsters Rolling Eyes

As for Zac - while he walks brilliantly on one (99% of the time), being an adolescent "i want to hump EVERYTHING" type of guy, I am not convinced he would still be with us on a normal collar and lead because he would have broken out of them by now Rolling Eyes and at 38 kilos and very single minded, he is one strong boy Rolling Eyes which is where I can also verify there is a HUGE difference between slip leads and check chains - you don't have anywhere near the level of control with a slip lead on a determined dog Shocked

I use check chains on my two and find they work really well. I was taught by a trainer at a kennels I used to work at how to use them.

They still wear their collars with them as they don't interfere with them and if they do I just readjust the check chain.

They both walk to heal now most of the time but I will continue to use them as they can occasionally pull and I like to have that control.

I'm another one for check chains and use them as suggested by our traininer, it's all about control isn't it.
