Reading through Helens "Over" thread, I was amazed (at I must say very impressed) at the number of commands some people appear to use.
I, like MattA99, like to keep it simple, in terms of verbal commands, I use "Get Out", "There", and "Over" if necessary, and err that's it
Apart from sending them by name for a marked retrieve, that is.
Hand signals for directions, (including out, without a verbal command, think about it, if the wind is against you, and the dog can't hear you).
I smiled at Blyparks "remote control dog" comment, don't know about anyone else, but I don't want one of those, yes, I want to be able to work the brakes and steering, but I want the dog to be smart enough to work things out for itself as well.
NAME on a mark
OUT on a blind and GET ON to encourage him to keep going
BACK to turn 180 degrees and go back
OUT for left and right
THERE to hunt
OVER to jump
Name for a marked
'Back' for a blind
'Loss' to hunt (which have debated and still am debating whether to change to a whistle command)
'Get out' for L & R
'Over' for an obstacle
I'm a bit naughty. having sat here and thought I use:
'Name' to send on a mark
'Back' for a blind
'Out' for left and right
'Over' for a fence if needed (on a marked retrieve its usually not needed)
'Steady there' for hunting in an area
But I know I also use another one (APART from OI! As John says which tends to pop up more often than I'd like.... 'WHAT are you bloody doing...' is pretty common too...)...
Which is ' Where is it...?' (said quietly and as quickly as possible to hide how naff it is...)
Now I use that when I am casting a dog into lets say a Wood out shooting or a picking up exercise area and they can range about as much as they like pretty much, only being stopped if they get stupidly out of the area. So in a TEST for example, in an exercise with 4 dummies in a half of a wood, I would send them straight out with 'back' then use 'Where is it?' to have them know they can hunt and hunt without me interferring much because I haven't a clue where it is either (unlike with 'steady there' where I have been TOLD "Its under that tree, or By the yellow stick" etc.
I know. Unnecessary probably in some eyes. But its always worked for me and its all horses for courses isn't it!

ooo you've reminded me of an extra one too. 'Find it', for the very same reason you describe Di but I have, confusingly, only ever used that when picking up.
