Is there any good advice on buying from a private owner? I was hoping to get a lab (not a puppy) from a rescue if possible but there aren't many that come up in my area, so a private sale would be my last resort. Just wondered what questions should I be asking?
I was going to ask where you are too - and also whether you are prepared to travel, what sort of age you are looking for etc. Have you tried breed rescues (ie Labrador rescue) as well as general rescue centres?
I'm in Sandbach, south Cheshire and want a yellow lab female or maybe male about 2-3 years ideally or younger if allowed due to us not owning a dog before as adults. Lab welfare don't cover this area and no young yellow labs. I've registered with Homealab but they tend to go really quickly. I've tried some other rescues in other areas but they have told me contact rescues in my own area. Hopefully, we will get sorted but just wondered about private sales just in case.
I know the Labrador trust will only rehome theirs at least 20miles away from where they came from. Ebony i know went to live about 100miles away i know and i know Shay was a fair way to. So you could register with them and they will let you know what they have. Saying that i got Cooper from a private home and hes lovely- i would just say that not everyone is truthful about why they are rehoming.
And a number of others, have a look at Dogpages.org.uk
OK, Private rehoming...
I would expect for the person rehoming to ask everything that I put on the sticky post, homechecking you or at least getting reference, asking for a donation of some kind, coming to see where you live.
Unfortunately when people rehome their dogs they aren't always honest, I would be asking WHY?? and look for the real reasons..
Reasons for rehoming
1. Behaviour - Destruction, Agression towards Kids, dogs, adults, animals in general.
Ask them what they have done to address it?
2. Illness of dog - have they discovered the dog has a life threatening or heridatary illness that they cannot afford?
3. Untrainable - Is it? or have they not bothered?
Of course there are those unfortunate people who have to rehome for reasons such as Divorce, being made homeless etc, but I would still be asking pertinant Q's re the above.
ABOVE ALL...GO VISIT the dog and walk away, think about it, then decide.

Thanks for your replies. I have got my eye on one but I'm not able to do anything til the end of Feb when OH has got some holidays. Just trying to think ahead. I would prefer to get one from a rescue anyway.
