Hi, everybody!
As promised to Jill, here is a short overview of what things look like in Russia.
I guess shooting is very different in Russia and UK.
We do have Pheasant shoots with birds being put down, like you have, but they are very limited and not popular.
Probably, because there are a lot of opportunities for wild game shooting, which is really popular.
As you know, Russia is huge country, and naturally, that game and type of hunting differs from region to region.
In the Central part of Russia the most popular are waterfowl (duck) and upland (quail or corn crake in the field, heath-**** in the forest) game. .
The most popular breeds are spaniels and HPR breeds. Pointing breeds are also popular, but mostly among hunters who prefer upland hunting.
Retrievers are gaining popularity and are used by hunters as “full-cycle” dogs – hunting, flushing, and retrieving.
Pure retriever job is quite limited – in the spring, when woodcock migrates, or during the morning/night duck passages.
In the north of Russia hunters shoot duck and health-**** as well plus grouse and partridge. A fur-bearing animal hunting is also quite popular there. Plus – moose, wild boar and bear. The most popular breed of dog is “laika” – I’m not quite sure, whether this is official breed, but these are dogs which look like husky, but are hunting ones. They trace animals and indicate animal’s position to hunter by barking. Very independent and unbiddable they just enjoy hunting through the forest and don’t need any direction from the hunter.
In the South of Russia there is wild Pheasant shooting in the beginning of winter. And retriever is believed to be the best dog for such of shooting. The cover is really tough there, and even spaniels have some problems in hunting. Retrievers are very good there, and as well are used for hunting, flushing and retrieving.
Generally, retrievers are quite popular breed now in Russia, but mostly they are used as companions. Using of retrievers as gundog is not quite common, however, during last few years, retrievers, especially Labradors are gaining more and more popularity as gundogs.
We don’t run working tests or retriever trials similar to the ones you have in UK.
We have retrieving test (quite basic one), waterfowl test and upland test for retrievers.
That’s probably it I’m not quite sure that I used proper words, but hope this is still understandable.
Would welcome any questions – I’ve got one more post left.
Regards, Julia
