My bitch Izzy is 11 months and having a phantom pregnancy - she seems ok, but what's best way of getting rid of the milk, she has just produced a tiny bit?

I wouldn't do anything unless this becomes a serious problem. I would reduce her food intake just a little, and also regulate a bit her water intake so offer her a drink 5 or 6 times a day rather than leaving water down and plenty of hard exercise and play to take her mind off her 'woes'.
Don't use any old wives tale rememdies to make milk go such as they can be harmful. Phantoms pass fairly quickly, its taking her mind off it as long as possible that helps. And also don't draw the milk down to check, the more is drawn the more she will produce so drop her food by a third just for a week or so, reduce her water intake except when she REALLY wants it (and if offered a drink she will take it if thirsty it won't harm her in anyway ).

Jess has been in season since 19th Feb - that's when I first noticed brown spotting. Can bitches be known to bleed for 2 weeks? 2 weeks and 2 days down the line, she is LOT lighter and it's now pink rather than bright red, but it seems to be going on and on and on! Is this "normal"?
Sorry to be so graphic, and I appreciate they're all different but she's my first bitch and it just seems to be going on for sometime!!!!

I've had two bitches bleed right through to the end of their season and one of them was for 28 days. So you could have a way to go yet  .

Absolutely. To give you some idea, we just mated a bitch here on her 21st day of her season. And she bled quite heavily every day until she was mated hence giving us quite clear signals (alongside the premate test results) that she was not ready. So 'bleeders right through' are very common, not abnormal at all, and are just proving the point that a season lasts 28 days whether thats convenient to bitch owners or not And they need keeping in for at least 2 and a half - 3 weeks of that.

I've just read this post, Di, thank you. I have a couple of questions because I am wondering if Tess has started her first season but I'm not sure!
Today I noticed a little patch of brownish fluid on my trousers after Tess and I had been romping around on the floor, so I got a tissue and dabbed at her vulva (she did NOT appreciate this one bit  ) and sure enough there's just a little brownish-red watery discharge, a bit like the beginning of a human period enough for me to think "Is This It?"
The discharge isn't constant, in fact I just dabbed her again (she really hates me now  ) and there's nothing there. Normally she's ok for me to touch anywhere on her body with anything so I'm quite surprised at her reaction which was to put her tail down between her legs and give me SUCH a dirty look. Now I'm confused - shouldn't she be putting her tail UP like a flag if she's in season? Her vulva *might* be a little bigger than usual, but I'm not sure. Certainly not very swollen, but there is this discharge that doesn't smell (to me) like anything infected or otherwise nasty.
It's definitely from her vulva, not her anus, and she's been passing water little and often as mentioned in your post, and this morning on our walk a (castrated) male collie thought she smelled wonderful enough to mount her!

Thank you so much for this post, I posted myself on this subject last night as Tess has come into season for the second time.
I really hate not having to walk her, she looks at me with such sad eyes!!
I have got in bones and special treats and will prob buy a few new toys just to feel better about her having no exercise!!
Just one more question?
Someone told me that you shouldn't spay a bitch if you let them have more than two seasons as it is more likely for a bitch to have cancer in the future? We are currently undecided as to whether we let Tess have puppies and would do it next spring if we decide yes, but if we decide no then she would have had three or four seasons by then??

Loon is my first dog and is my only experience of being in season.
Luna's one and only season sounds just like what you describe with Tess. Very little bleeding, brownish but definitely from vulva. We put her to sleep on a light coloured duvet cover and that would reveal that there was discharge over night. There was only a few days at most of marks, she was cleaning more often and that was always a smear when I tissue checked her. She didn't look swollen, dogs were interested.
I THINK that bitches will flag when at their most fertile ie the middle of the season but I'm sure someone can answer that one for sure!
We had Luna booked for her spay a few days after first spotting the discharge so called vet. She agreed it sounded like her season and so we moved her op!
