Thanks Di! That might be all it is. She seems in good spirits otherwise and is enjoying some relaxation time. Cool I'm sure she won't say no to a sardine or two though, no matter how low her appetite!

A good read, thanks for posting the info up. I've not been on here for several months but Peppa started bleeding Thursday afternoon and her bits are massively swollen. She is 10 1/2 months. I've no experience of bitches prior to Peppa as my parents dogs when I was a kid/teenager etc were all boys.

How does everyone cope with the dripping blood? We have young children and can't put down sheets all over the downstairs of the house for a month. I have a huge thick blanket for Peppa to lay on of an evening but at the moment i'm confining her for most of the day to the utility room or the garden if it's sunny as I just can't have her bleeding all over the place. She is not one for sitting quietly in one place. Even just in the utility room I am constantly checking for and clearing up blood spots.

On only day 3 I can't imagine how this will last for 4 weeks as she hates not being allowed to be with me as she is more clingy than normal. Also it's driving her nuts not going for her lunch time walks with her male and female friends as she is one for her routine. She goes out every week day with upto 4 other labs which is the highlight of her day.

I've taken her out for her morning walk which is always on lead anyway (her recall is appalling even after training and bronze award etc). But from reading this it looks the morning walk will have to stop too. How do you replace that excercise for 4 weeks? No amount of playing in the garden will come close to the walks and running around with her friends. Is it a case of tough luck for her and just give her plenty of exercise as soon as her season ends?

Sounds like she is in for a pretty boring 4 weeks. In fact a month from Thursday will be Christmas day Surprised

Sadly, we pick to have girls and its the major drawback! There is no magic answer other than keep a bottle of spray and a cloth handy and don't drive yourself mad. A bit of blood won't hurt the kids Wink Nothing harmful is contained in it. Although its not ideal of course! Take heart that usually around day 12 - 13 dripping will cease whilst she ovulates for 4 - 6 days, and then a lot of bitches do not resume dripping till the end of week four as heavily as they did. The dripping on the first two weeks is the worst is what i'm trying to say Wink

And look forward to spaying her in a couple of months time and never having to do this again Wink

Di

Thanks Di. Yep already had the conversation with the vet ages ago and she told us to book her in 8 weeks after the last day of her season and been waiting ever since. Using the large blanket for her eveywhere she goes currently. Shes moulting too so a lovely mixture of hair and blood all over the once yellow blanket Laughing

Also just found out you can get doggy nappies! I've been looking at them on line and they look perfect. Anyone tried them?

I find it so hard to imagine a labrador keeping a nappy on. Thoughts of a million pieces of nappy all over the floor come to mind. Shocked

Bought her some pants today and you put a pad in them. Well it allowed her to come in the car with us to my parents, walk round without dripping anywhere and come home again with no blood. Took her pants off when we got home and chucked her pad and now she is asleep in the lounge on her blanket having been out with us for the first time since Thursday.

She was brilliant, only a couple of nudges seeing what the heck she was wearing but seemed to twig it was for her benefit. Put the pants on and hey presto she had freedom to wander.

Might not be for all but has worked for us.

Molly is back out and about again now after finishing her first season. It's a month and a few days since she started bleeding, so it should have run its course by now.

Her buddy Sam (the spaniel) was playing with her this morning outside and after the usual lick and trot about, he did try and mount her and he did pee a few times in the drive. He was definitely "keen".

Is it likely she still has a "scent" which will attract male dogs? Or do dogs mount bitches when they're not in season anyway?

She may retain a scent for a while yet as her hormones settle back down. The time period given for a season is to prevent pregnancy occuring as they would be well past ovulation. However sadly some girls smell 'nice' longer than others and so can get a bit of hassle for a good couple of weeks afterwards. A few sea swims and a bath might help, but won't completely mask the homone smell.
