Hi,
This is my first post on this site. I think its fantastic.
Ive recently moved across the country and my 18month old black lab Kila had been staying with my brother for 6 months whilst i got everything sorted and settled for her. According to my brother she had her first season in December (aged 11months), he told me to expect her 2nd around now as his staff bitch is coming in too and last time they were the same time. Her "lady garden" has been very swollen last week or so and my other brothers dog (staff) wont leave her alone. Im rather squeamish and wasnt looking forward to bloody drops everywhere so bought a few "nappies" from eBay for her ready. My brother assured me that she didnt bleed alot but i wanted to be prepared. I think its a known thing with Labs but when Kila wags her tail she wags her whole body! Whilst she was eating her dinner last night before bed i noticed she was flicking blood up my walls and on the kitchen floor...about 5/10 drops in about 10mins. I didnt realize it was her to start with but then grabbed the "nappies" out of her cupboard. Let her finish her dinner, took her outside for her evening toilet and then put her nappy on when we got back in...she wasnt amused to say the least!
The frustrating thing is, for the last 17months shes been crated whilst weve been in bed or when shes left on her own because shes a chewer-laptop leads, hair brushes, sky remotes, list is endless...but for the last 4days she hasnt been locked up, she stil goes to her crate but the door is always open. Even though she was wearing her nappy-i knew she wouldnt keep it on long so i recrated her again...and she didnt like that! I felt terrible! But hopefully will only be for a short while. Different website ive looked at all contradict her bleeding scale...one says 4-5 days, another says 7-10days and then i read on here could be as long as the full 28days?? Im so confused, ive never had a dog before.

I understand i have to limit her walks now-being a lively puppy thats going to be very difficult but theres dogs roaming free around this estate-some heavty staffs that scare the life out of me at best of times-i dont wanna get between them and their "leg over" so i will try keep her in or go out the back with her.

How soon can i book her in to be spayed? I tried getting her done few months ago but because i wasnt 100% sure when her last season was the vet refused to do it until after her next one-which i found frustrating but im sure they have their reasons.

Im sorry for the long winded message...and im hoping someone gets notifications to say someone has replied or else i will be pulling my hair out until the end and see how the cycle works for myself Wink

Thanks for reading

You could get the dog sanitary pants which you insert a little sanitary pad into. Made by Mikki, you can leave those on the dog really easily and just change the pad a few times throughout the day. I think probably better than nappies (though unsure as I dont know how easy the nappies are to put on). You have to take the mikki pants off for when she needs to go to the toilet. So this shouldnt have an impact on her crating or non crating!

Regarding spaying. It is adviseable to wait until three months after the season as average cycle is roughly 6months. So you need to do it bang in the middle of the cycle. So as to be sure the hormones are as settled as possible and the uterus will have had a chance to return back to normal too.

When the colour of the blood changes to more see through that she is fertile, usually the vulva is more pronounced at this stage and her tail will"flag" twitch to the side. She may or may not display flirty behaviour. You need to be careful from at least one week in to the season for approximately two weeks. - as the fertile time varies. (even after finished bleeding exert caution with her). Some people will keep the bitch indoors for a month - you need to weigh up if you can handle a rampant dog mounting your girl as to whether you can walk her or not.

The reason a vet wont spay when they dont know when to expect the season - is because the uterus is more friable (fragile) and will tear easily if about to come into season thus making the procedure harder to perform safely.

Regards
Heidi

Thank you for your prompt reply Heidi, i thought id be waiting at least a few days Wink

These "nappies" are sold at pets at home etc but i got them cheaper via eBay, they very simular to a babies nappy, put her tail through the little hole at the top, slide it under her front the same as you would a baby and velcro it on the top...exactly the same as babies except its back to front Wink can be seen on following link Very Happy

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=31023941981 3

She seems to be getting used to it now...but i showed her that if i take the nappy off she goes in the crate, put the nappy on and she can run around as she likes...whether she understood or not remains to be seen but shes not fighting to get it off now...just laying on floor with her puppy dog eyes making me feel terribly guilty! Took her nappy off just now for her to go out and play ball in the back yard, there was small amounts of blood on the pad but she didnt lose anything whilst she was running around the garden...will she be simular to a humans cycle where it takes a day or two for the flow to kick in? bless her shes always been a soppy thing but shes turned exceptionally soppy now lol

Only reason i crated her last night is because i knew she would get her nappy off-and i have brand new cream carpet down-not ideal with a puppy and a baby on the way but we didnt think of that to start with Wink

If she keeps her nappy on today without too much of a fight-and depending on the flow later this evening i may leave the crate door open and see how we get on.

As with the spaying, now i have a rough idea of dates i can ring my vets on Monday and see the waiting time on getting her booked in

Thanks again for the prompt reply

Sammie & a soppy Kila

Hello,

Can anyone help.....Bella has started bleeding and after talking to the vet he said its likely that she is in season. That wouldn't worry me normally but she had her first season March/April time (so started end of March 20th and finished April).

Her vulva is huge and I was concerned about this before I noticed her bleeding. It looks like she is a boy Sad No other signs at the moment i.e. paranoid it could be pyo. She's eating well, active just maybe a little sad looking in her eyes and whiny.

Has anyone else experienced this...I mean coming into season again so soon after her last one. BTW Bella is 14 months.

Thanks
'Worried Mum'

Hi there,

most bitches cycle in six monthly cycles, so a season after 6 months is VERY normal. Most bitches swell a lot too. 'Babboon bottom' is a common describing phrase Wink

If she came into season in march you COUNT that as the FIRST month of her new cycle. So march, April, may, June, July, August.... 6 months. Might be she is a couple of weeks off 6 months but thats very normal too. All is fine! Wink

Ellie is having her first season....at 9 months so that's fine but I am right in classing day 1 as being the first day she started bleading? If so we are day 19 today and she bled for 17 days - I can't recall either of my previous bitches bleeding for this long should I be concerned?

She has been getting some fresh air in the garden and a late night lead walk, but the hormones have so affected her brain bless her as I thought oh I will do some training trying to make up for the fact we missed 3 weeks of training classes and to tire her out. Ellie however has other ideas she has forgotten almost all of her commands and really all she is up for is sleeping and cuddling in next to me or guarding her soft toys or she'll start and whine and look to the door for going on a walk rather than the garden door.

She will be spayed in January as part of our adoption agreement. Thank goodness this is the only time she'll go through this as she's not enjoying the house confinement. Any ideas?

Thats right, take it from the first day of blood. A seson is 28 days or so in length, some bleed for every single day of that, MOST tail off about 13/14 to ovulate, and then come back to bleeding about 4 or 5 days later just for a day or three. So yes its fine MANy bitches bleed at least 21 days so 17 is pretty good. Some don't bleed a lot at all.... tailing off from virtually the day they start. All is normal. Just know she could be receptive and ovulate anytime really from about day 5 till about day 22 so be VERY careful to keep her home away from other dogs about this sort of length of time regardless of how much or little she bleeds.

Train her in the garden. Teach her a trick or two, there are loads of threads on this on here. your routine sounds good with free access to the garden when you are around and a lead walk late at night round the roads. Its what we would all wish from bitch owners to be honest but few are as thoughtful as you. Wink But its only a few more days now so keep at it Wink
