It sounds like she is over her season now. Most of my girls have gone out after 21 days, as like yours any discharge has long since stopped and the vulva has gone back down again. I give them a bath before going back out again though, as they tend to have that Red Hot Mama smell all over them for a while otherwise. And for the first few walks out I try to avoid dog heavy areas, just in case there is any hint of odour left.

So, if they're at least a week post bleeding with 'normal' bits, then they're probably safe to walk?

It's a bit of a minefield, this whole season thing! Indy came in last Monday night/Tuesday morning and by my reckoning, day 28 is the 7th July. She's still bleeding bright red blood so I don't expect that she'll be letting up anytime soon...

I'm glad this thread is here, I did read it when it was originally written but it's been useful to refer back to again now she actually has come in. For reference, she was just over 9 months old at the start, I suspect thats "average" ?

Thanks Di for the informative post

I have just posted on a Wolfhound site actually about this same topic as Tara is now 9 months old and apparently in the Giant breed can come in any time between 11 and 14mths so Tara is due imminently!

Having never had an unspayed bitch before I hadn't a clue and I am now dreading it...!

At least now I am forewarned and forearmed.

Another question.. does having a season make them more snappy and unpredictable around other dogs? Can it change a friendly bitch into a PMT one? Laughing

I don't have a PMT riddled bitch...she's just way more clingy and cuddly and has 'worried eyes' quite a lot Laughing

Tara is 9 months? Good grief, where has the time gone? I didn't realise she's the same age as Indy!

My only bitch was Topsy, Natalie. Her season was one that I could easily have missed if I had not been looking out for it, and behaviour-wise she showed no sign of changes such as PMT etc. She remained pretty much as she always is. Razz

I guess they are all different though.
