This is taken from the current edition of the KSSLRC Members Newsletter - it struck a chord with me and maybe it will with others too. I don't know who wrote it or whether its famous or not - hopefully if Alison sees this she might be able to shed some light on the author...
The "SHOW" Bred Labradors Tale
I'm used to being my owners pet
The one that he fusses over and yet
Every now and again, I'm taken to a show
This is great fun, if you don't know
I have to stand and pretend to be keen
Whilst I'm fed treats (he's not mean)
And occasionally I stand in a line
Whilst people clap, and I feel fine
One day he took me somewhere new
My experience was assessed and 'phew'
It was decided to put me in the novice class
To see if I could do it all and pass
Well I couldn't understand the test
They wanted to see if I had the zest
To pick up some funny canvas thing
(And be doing all this with zing!)
My owner had a very long face
They had really put him in his place
A working dog I was not to be
That was plain for anyone to see
Well to be fair, he tried once more
But the message was the same as before
I was unruly and had no zip
I was definitely SHOW and that's not hip
So he didn't try to train me to the gun
Not realising that I could have such fun
Doing the job for which I'm bred
When it's all done and said
Then one day he took me out for a run
With some of his friends who had a gun
And all of a sudden there were birds to pick
And it gave this SHOW dog such a kick
I just felt that I knew what to do
And my owner was very happy too
Even though some of the birds he got
Hadn't been properly shot
Well to cut a long story short
And to give others pause for thought
I'm not not only a good dog for pose
But am also valued for my nose
We've been through thick and thin
My owner often resorted to the gin
And although this might make "working" men gag
I'm now a dog who puts game in the bag
I might not be flashy or trial standard gold
But I don't shiver when the water is cold
I don't hoover open field when there's nothing there
But I'll hunt cover with lots of care
I might be a little slow
And not have that much go
But a shooting man's companion, that's me
And that's what I was bred to be
I'll lie by my owner in front of the fire
I'll play with the offspring that he did sire
I'll pick up birds and raid the bin
And I'll always do it all with a grin
I'm always ready for a cuddle
Won't mind at all if he's in a muddle
And I'll always be ready for more
Because I'm a LABRADOR
Anne Stocks, wrote this about her black dog Carpenny Tally. Elsa,s litter brother.
I went on a shoot with Anne and Tally, a couple of weeks ago. It was a shame i didnt have a camera to catch Tally and Elsa, as it was lovely to see brother and sister working together.
