Mallies first season of trials drew to a (very satisfactory after a horrific *8th* run filled with disaster!) close yesterday with her 9th run of the season in the UGS Novice Driven stake at Wisdon shoot, Near Findon. A lovely ground, to add to other fantastic, amazing, lovely grounds since October and starting her 'career'.
It might be hard to understand, how, in 9 runs, an award is not achieved by a half decent dog. God knows we have been seriously close and I do say so myself. Generally only to screw up at the 11th hour, but a couple of times just by the turn of the wind.... literally. I would also, but without offering it as a poor excuse, say that many of the trials i've attended, with big names and superb dog work, have resulted in one, maybe two awards from the whole field, this is entirely at random and at the judges discretion. Just because 5 dogs finish a trial in the 4th round does NOT mean 5 cards will be awarded by any means!
With all the Labradors in our working world, I would like to say that one of the reasons i'm unduly proud of mallie is Because, after serious research and burrowing, there appears to be apporximately a maximum of 5 chocolate dogs or bitches in the whole COUNTRY who have been seriously trialling. I'm very proud to add her to that very small number and know it will only rise. She has a daughter for example who will be out next year in better hands than mine!
Anyway its been a great journey I will repeat year upon year from here on in having only played around the edges before. The respect due to our dogs who sit there, as 20, 50, 100+ birds rain down around them, offlead and without a single vocal command for 20 - 25 minutes to 'hold' them there whilst every nerve in their body screams to go do the job they were born for, is absolute.
So....
'Thats Trialling!'....
There comes a time, you hit a stage
You need to go that extra mile
So despite the fact my dog is Brown,
I entered in Field Trials.
Friends tried to keep their faces straight
and said 'It could be a farce!
For gods sake shes all showbred
Shes even got a ginger arse!'
'You'll take a run off someone else
Who has a *field trial* dog
Have you a clue Ms *Dual Purpose*
That this is a 'specialists' job?'
I've trialled before, I know the ropes
But only a few times
But 15 years of working tests
Had taught me a few signs....
....That though indeed my girl is brown
and yes her roots are 'Show'
She won her way to Open tests
Showing heart and guts and 'Go'!
So forms went in, and dates were booked
and training stepped up a gear
My emotions were balanced between
real excitement and blind fear!
The first run came, no sleep for nights
The Trial was Novice Driven
We were the last dog standing but....
Sadly no awards were given!
The learning curve swept fast uphill
She'd shown that she was ready
But these huge shoots birds fall like rain
Could she REALLY stay steady?
But Steady 'is' as steady 'does'
Her arse stayed on the ground
I perfected something known to the trade
as the 'Move and i'll kill you' frown!
We had some days where in round ONE
We were swiftly homeward bound,
But then the sun broke through and one fine day
We found ourselves in the fourth round!
I'll draw a veil over how we managed
To rob ourselves of a card
Suffice to say that tears were shed
This game is bl**dy hard!
You start and all you want to do
Is not make yourself look a clown
But the passion rises and the gloves come off
and you quickly want the crown!
So now the seasons almost done
Its left me hugely smiling
Dodgy decisions, blood sweat and tears,
You shrug and say....... 'Thats Trialling!'

In a post I put up in Gen Lab chat I met a chap today who has a choccy lab and trials and shoots and thinks its complete tosh that choccy labs are 'untrainable'.
So lets just get this clear...... you're an excellent trainer , you write brilliantly, you breed the most wonderful once-in-a-life-time puppies, you're blond, young(ish!) and now it seems that you can compose a natty poem too I'm trying to figure out why I still like you!
Very good poem Di, and lovely to hear how proud you are of that little brown bitch of yours!
Becs and The Gang
PS Tell me something that you're cr*p at, please!!!
It is rather sick making isn't it Becs?? but lovely to meet someone who is a good 'all rounder'
Di - I am rather ashamed to say I didn't KMH knows him. He is part of SEGS and knows you (I did name drop I'm ashamed to say ) and Gilly and Maddie. The dog was 12 yrs old and his wife has a yellow.
Great poem Di, sorry you didn`t get any awards this year but onwards and upwards, there`ll be plenty more years to come and this year/next year I bet you`ll get something
becs, seen some pics of di in some rather dodgy gear, somewhere on LF, and i think you have said yourself Di has no fashion sense, now i dont know her myself and really cant comment but i just wanted to help you out with your reasons to dislike di for, i have to admit to finding it a tad irritating that she has all those lovely doggies and writes such good stories, its time someone had a dig
