meg is no good on a head halti but its fine on a harness but i do find a pain in the ass to get on n off anyhow with flat lead training she is fine if you stop start on every trip she gets it after 4-6 stop starts but in the end i want her to be on just a collar n lead so would a half choke be better than a full harness?? full chokes n halfs are new to me so just want your thoughts??
on a nylon collar she pulls to choking point and a dublin she streatches it
What are you wanting the choke/half choke/harness to do?
If its to stop pulling, or to help with a puller, then none of them.
Full chains should only be used on dogs which DO NOT pull.
I would maybe suggest a trainer to help you sort out her pulling.. thats the first thing to solve. Then, you can happily walk her in anything you like...
Agree with Suzy, the only solution to pulling is oodles of time and patience.
Try to walk when you don't have anywhere you have to be and can spend time just correcting every time she pulls and praising everytime she is by your side.
The hardest thing about pulling is that if it's even occasionally ignored and the dog actually gets to pull and get ahead then it is rewarded.
An intermittent reinforcement schedule is THE most effective way to train something in.
Check and Half checks should only be used if you know how to use them, they are for correcting the heel rather than using them for a puller.
When using a check chain it should be sharp check upwards and the comand should be used, if your dog is a puller the check chain can cause damage to the vertebra in the wrong hands.

iknow this must soundconfusing but i reguard megs not a puller as she pulls 3-4 times and i do stop start and she walks nicely, providing we power walk, but if i get the kids then ill stick her on the harness but as the harness is a pain to put on i have been using a flat collar but findshe pulls 5-6 times before gettin it altho i do lots of heel work its not she pulls its probably me not trustin her with out the harness and yes she walks nice with a flat collar but there are times where she will go tear arsing after another dog andi cant hold her back if shes on a flat collar where if shes got the harness on i get her to sit and i have summat to hold onto also i say watch me as they past and she does but on a flat collar its like shes naked and wants to run free!!!!
does that make sence????
or shall i just persist with harness but flat collar training where its quiet no other dogs??
Or do i get a half check to pop it to get her attention and then i can do the "watch me" till a dog passes, coz on a flat collar she wont listen to me??
I do know your dilemma. If I haven't got to be anyway I can do flat collar training with Cadbury and he comes on nicely, but if I've got to be somewhere I do use the halti, else it would take all day.
I don't know the answer, he pulled me across the carpark the other day to meet his mate. Wasn't a good thing, but I simply couldn't stop him.
He does do a lovely heel now, if he's concentrating. I'm afraid I'm a bit of a failure on the loose lead walking front.
Well im glad you get me! its a wierd one coz part of me thinks its me that i dont trust her goin comando and i suppose a half check is more reasurance that when she gets tempted i can pop it iand say sit and watch me till they pass but on a flat lead megs like arebel!! she walks nicely but once she sees another dog shes like sod you mam!!
i prefer the halti, only personal choice, although ryleigh is fairly good,i dont like the check chains me i think there cruel if not used correctly but thats just me,
I have to say after reading your last post, it doesn't so much sound like a pulling problem, but more a respect problem.
If he walks 'ok' without pulling, but then pulls you wherever he likes when he sees another dog, then you need to let him know 'the instance' there is any movement/pull/tension on the lead, that you want him to SIT and STAY.. as in.. don't you dare move, I have told you to sit, now sit...
I know when your out and about in public, you don't want to be seen to be shouting, or whatever at your dog, but the more you let them do it, you are just inviting them to do it again and again, and they will learn its ok, which its not.
I would suggest a flat collar and lead, down the park, keep him on the lead, and walk past as many dogs as you can.... do overkill on walking on the lead, and near lots of dogs.. get him to sit and stay... correct him as soon as he even looks like he wants to get to them....
Its kind of tough love in a way.. but when you ask your dog to sit and stay, you have to mean it, everytime...
