I have to confess that I sometimes browse the ads too (and Im not even looking for another dog!)
Only the other day I contacted one to point them in the direction of a lab rescue to help them as they were also offering an intact male free
I was so worried where he would end up too.
If you know what you are looking for and the right questions to ask then its fine, but bear in mind that people don't often tell the truth when giving their dogs up.
What happens if the dog turns out to have behavioural issues, health problems, you have no back up, you can't return the dog.
At least a rescue dog comes with back up and has been assessed for rehoming.
I would always email to OP and suggest the rehome their dogs via rescue, and that it wont end up in kennels (which is the misconception) that it will be rehomed from their home or will go into foster.

I scan one particular Free add on a daily basis. I do send emails to the owners pointing them in the direction of Lab Rescue. 98% of the time, I do not get a response and when I do the reply is wouldn't touch a rescue with a barge pole as all you are after is money. Go and get a proper job.

God yes, everyone I know involved in rescue is raking it in Not. What twits.
Nat's right with all she says about there being no back up, rescue support, possible untruths told etc. Saying that one of mine was from the free-ads as a private rehoming (not bought as a pup) due to a marriage break-down. It seemed clear he was going to go to the first person that turned up so that was me and home he came. I did tell my husband if things didn't work out that I would find a home/rescue place for him - and at least I would have cared where he went - but I had no intention of parting with him really.
If the dog is free to a good home, it is definitely worth making contact and suggesting that they contact a rescue and making people aware of the risks of advertising a dog free to good home.
I've had a more positive response from those sort of ads to the ones where people want to sell the dog on. I don't tend to look at the free-ads anymore though, rescues are full and there are so many litters of badly bred pups advertised for sale it makes me cry.
Good luck, I personally would take him and give him to rescue to assess and find a good home for him, Ruth 'Jodysmum' is involved with Lab Rescue Scotland, you could PM her ask her what she advises
Rescues making money What planet are some people on, no-one does it for anything other than the love of the animals
