The only option is to reduce what she is having by one third, which is probably not what you want to hear.

i agree i would reduce the food considerably ....................
you have to be cruel to be kind sometimes - and you will have a much healthier dog as she gets fitter

i have never used "light foods" with my dogs - just reduced the intake......

i wish you luck - if you are struggling ask your vets nurses for help

good luck

Firstly, one week on a diet is no time at all, although as I said on your last thread I would reduce her daily amount to around 200g.

Also when you say you do a 30 min walk....what sort of walk is this? Is it a 30 min potter with her stopping to sniff every blade of grass....or is it 30 mins of you striding out and her having the trot the whole time? The difference in energy expenditure between the two is huge, so have a closer look at what she is actually having to do.

Same with the off lead exercise....is she just plodding around or is she running after a ball or playing chase with another dog? As a fittening exercise for Mojo, I throw a ball up a steepish hill and let her run up after it. I only have to do this for about 5 mins (about 10-15 throws) and this gives her a good cardio work out (and has developed some lovely muscley thighs Wink ).

Losing weight isn't just about reducing intake and using "lite" foods, it's about getting that ticker going to increase her metabolism. The faster her metabolism the quicker she will loose weight. Wink

Shocked I am sure this conversation was had before - the RECOMMENDED MAINTENANCE daily intake of light food is around 225g - therefore it is quite possible she could PUT ON weight on 300g a day Shocked

I seem to note you mentioned she has been lame recently as well?

It is very very important you get weight off her - and that is going to have to be done by significant reduction in food - Chicken bran and carrots are both apparently proven products for bulking out and filling up without adding weight - but of course, can't say it doesn't add to what comes out the other end Wink

That works with some dogs, one of mine is on such low quantities anyway - I find the Iams Light very effective - but then generally, I am only talking a kg or so over when Clover goes on her raiding binges, we occasionally indulge her, or I take my eye off the ball for what seems like a minute Embarassed

Well I'm obviously being a bit of a thicky then, but Dyl is 32kg and his recommended amount of JWB is 430g (32kg is I would say spot on for his frame) Surely the point of light food is that it is less calorific not more so than ordinary adult? If I put Dyl on 200g he'd look like a famine victim Shocked.

Just checked Hills feeding guide for their adult light and for a large breed 30-40kg it's 415g - 510g per day. JWB recomend for an adult 24-40kg 285g - 415g daily.

I have to say I rather suspect that Jules has it spot on and that the quality of the exercise is the issue here.
