The commands you use in the gundog world... are there standard ones or are your 'own' acceptable?

if i use the 'wrong' term will i get funny looks (not that i don't get those anyway Laughing ) or is it as long as it works, it goes?

such as the commands for hunt an area or to give you the retreive

thanks

Various commands are used Sam. To hunt and area the old command was "Hi Lost." but today many people just use "Lost" or "Lost There"

To give a retrieve, some use "Dead" or "Give" or even "Thanks"

Regards, John

I'm glad you posted this question Sam as I was wondering the same thing! I keep getting my 'go backs' and 'get outs' muddled (and mutter 'fetch' to Zorro under my breath because I think thats all he understands anyway!) and then trying to co-ordinate the right body movements along with it too........it's a bit like learning a foreign language and line dancing at the same time!

Do you use a 'hunt' whistle Sam? Because my trainer does (which is a soft longish peep, followed by a short peep) and I'm not sure where or when I'd squeeze a 'Hi Lost' in...........worry, worry! So much to learn!

I always say 'Thank-you' to Zorro for a retreive (if I haven't fallen asleep in the time it's taken him to go and get it!!)

I don't think the command matters as long as you use it consistently and you achieve the desired results...

I use Basil for a mark and Back for a memory (and will be blind). I do worry that they are too similar and he's not really grasping a difference Confused

I use Out for both directions.

For hunt Embarassed I use Find, as that is something he understands from puppy games and I see no point in changing it even though it sounds silly.

well i've been using 'ta' when he gives me something. and both does know 'find it' so will probably continue using those.

Becs - i have enough trouble trying to blow stop whistle and say sit at the same time without spitting the whistle out by which time the dog has normally already sat!

I use 'thank you' to take a dummy too, it's polite Laughing

Yep me too.
Unfortunately I first taught Basil just to stop not sit on the whistle so it was a pain in the bum to change but we've got there after several discontinued 'sits' with basil just standing looking at me blankly.
Poor dog I have changed the game so many times for him.

When I tried that whistle-in-mouth-while-talking thing it just sounds like im slurring my words.

If it helps any Sam you should actually have no need of the sit command anymore just the stop whistle (with Finn anyway).

Don't continue to use sit for too long it was just an aid in the beginning to show Finn what you meant. It should be totally unnecessary by now and probably just a crutch you are using.

Lecture over Wink .
