Hi peeps, i know of 2 members (so far) who use these, the half chain half material collars, which are supposed to be for when 'humane and limited correction is required'. Good for pullers?

http://www.canine-spirit.com/shop/detail.asp?prodid=122&offersid=-1

Here's an example of one.

What do we think about these?

I use full chain collars / or thick slip leads on all mine and i would never go back - used correctly (I had considerable training first) - they are kinder and less stressful for dog and owner - mine walk with them like they are necklaces - and other than for initial excitement, or when Zac see's something very interesting - I have no reason to use them for any correction Very Happy

I have them and used correctly and fitted correctly, they are good.

in my mind i use slip leads when training but when i'm out and about, i want a similar effect so the half checks or ones like this are good.. the everest collar at the bottom...

I know load of people who use them both correctly and incorrectly. I've got to say though that if the dog is allowed to just pull into them, they are no more effective than a flat collar.

You have to train the dog to respond to the clinking as the chain tightens, in the same way that you do with a Check Chain. So the moment the dog moves too far forward, the lead goes taut, the chain clinks and at that precise moment you have to either change direction, stop or pop (little jerk) the collar to get the dogs attention focussed back on you and into the right position.

Yes they do work as the lead tightening makes the chain clink and the dog then grows to associate this noise with having to pay attention to the handler.....but without this training they are as good as useless, as the correction they give should be no more than a gentle squeeze of the neck if fitted correctly.

Thanks Jules - see what you mean re: only works with the right training...otherwise, as good as useless...

i use these on my lab and GSD and they are both good with them, the sound of the chain clinking seems to check them before the collar tightens if they start pulling, but they must be fitted correct and adjusted if necessary as dog grows

I personally like using them when my dogs are swimming reguarly.

I don't use them for pulling or training...I only really use them when they go swimming because they are the only collar i can find that doesn't slip off or come loose when they are swimming hard, or going quite far out to retrieve.

In lakes etc, Leo will tend to go out quite far to get a ball or dummy etc, and constantly i found that his collar would slip off or the slip would come loose.

And i don't really like him not wearing a collar, incase anything happened and we got seperated (god forbid!). Half check chains stay on and this is why i use them....But other than when they are having a hard swim, i don't generally have them wearing them - But thats only because i feel that the collars leave a metal grey colour on Leos neck area when it's on him all the time.

Thanks Jill, know what u mean re: swimming. Lucy is in and out the water ALL the time, so this would definitely suit.

Sam - is the only difference between the one you posted and the one i posted that my one is half chain and yours in all material but still with with the D-ring concept?

I don't think it will help Jemima no..

Check chains, full choke chains, slip leads etc, are only really fine on dogs which do not pull....

I'm afraid you already know what to do!!! Flat collar and lead! Train train train! Don't tollerate it from the moment the lead is on! Come on girl!!

Does she walk to heel off lead? If not, start, as Chester is better heeling off lead than on, and you can imrove one without even thinking about it.
