yes i think insurance it the way to go, whilst we are not exactly paupers, we aint overly rich either and i really dont want to see our savings go on vets fees, after all savings are for us to enjoy not the vet
think i am well on the way to convincing the oh as well

I would agree with Scubabe except I wouldn't consider using a credit card. A vet bill of £5000 on a credit card @ 6.5%pa, paid off at £100pm, would take almost 5 years to pay off and interest rates vary hughly. You would really need to shop around.
If you don't have at least £5000 in the bank then I'd definitely insure, but I'd also be looking for a lower excess than £100.
