ok i will try keep this brief, but be warned it might get a tad long,

in a nutshell zak is not insured for anything relating to his epilepsy we have to pay for all his meds, his blood tests, and anything else that crops up as linked to epilepsy, currently his meds are costing £72 per month, and we are putting aside £25 per week to cover his epilepsy expenses. He is insured with More Than, and the renewal is up at the end of january, OH thinks we should not insure him again as the money saved on insurance could be put away for future epilepsy treatment, I am scared to do this, what if he eats something he shouldn't and needs an operation, or what if he gets injured?? More Than have upped the premium by £5 per month, an internet search comes up with a reasonable policy from Sainsburys for £13 per month, and covers him for £7.500 per illness with £100 excess, this puts the monthly budget for zaks up to £85 plus all food etc.. i am not arguing about the cost we will always find the money somehow to get zak what he needs but obviously we have to do so with other bills and commitments in mind, so question is

1 do i insure him at all, when the money could be put away for treatment needed
or
2 insure him with sainsburys?

would just like to know what others would do or think in similar situation

sheila and zak

anyone got any experience with sainsburys??

I would always insure. I have had that emergency one-off once with Charlie, through eating rubbish. It cost £800. Christmas that year would have been cancelled if we had not had insurance, as we just cannot afford that sort of money easily.

Helen.

Hi Sheila

Why does his policy not insure him for epilepsy, was he diagnosed before you insured him? We are with Petplan and luckily they have never quibbled over Millie, they even allows us to claim her monthly medication.

Is there nowhere that will take him and include his epilepsy?

If it were me I would take the basic policy, as you say you never know what they will get up to and even minor things can cost, Penny just cost £100 this week for an ear infection and we have to go back again next week which will be even more.

Maybe a basic policy will help to put your mind at rest?

Only my thoughts but hope it helps.

Jayne

zaks first fit was in the november 2006, he had no further fits until after i changed insurance companies in january 07, even then he did not start any epilepsy treatment until march 07 but too late the first fit was classed as pre-existing, so be warned anyone changing policies with anything at all recorded at the vets.

i have not found or know of a company that will include his epilepsy, if anyone on here knows if such a company exists i would be delighted to talk to them,

and yes i am thinking basic cover will at least give me an easy mind, thanks for the suggestion

Sheila, do you have a nice fat savings account or ISA or a credit card which is always kept empty and only ever used for emergencies?
Do you have access to £5000 at short notice?

If the answer to the above is no, then yes, get the cheapo insurance for him.

If the answer to the above is yes, or sort-of, then nope, don't bother with the insurance.

I would say unless you uber rich (like me - not Sad ) then insurance is a necessity, I dont think anyone will cover epilepsy unfortunately, but I would also try Direct Line too, I have found them to be excellent Very Happy

Sheila

We have our GSD insured with Sainsbury's and had to claim 2 yrs ago when he was just over a year old. He started limping and we thought he'd strained his back leg running round in the garden with the JRT, the vets examined and x-rayed him, gave some Metacam and some antibiotic injects and would have cost nearly £500.

We had to pay the excess £50 and then Sainsburys paid the rest straight to the vets so had no probs with them at all but his premium went from £13 to £28 per mth but now we down to £24 but cant move insurance as the vet said it was HD so now we stcuck but looking at Axa for Ciara.
