Let me explain - I am a very squeamish person, the sort that averts their eyes if there is anything remotely unpleasant around - gets upset if something is killed on the road...
Imagine my surprise the other day when driving along the road, I see a pheasant freshly killed by the side of the road, not only do I not bother BUT my first thought was to stop pick it up and use it with Neo to start some cold game retrieving!
Mary he went on the KSS taster day in August - absolutely loved it and Di sent me such a lovely e-mail saying he was "tremendously willing with real enthusiasm and talent"
I was sooo touched as you can tell - I so want to get both of them into gundog training as I think they would love it - and Bramble would present SUCH a challenge to the trainers - setters don't do retrieving!!!
But since then Neo had his op and is really only now back to normal - Bramble has had the well known eating issue and I've had Dad to worry about....
But now I really do want to start them....it would be great!
Thats great Eve, didn`t realise he`d already had a go, hope you can take them both out at some point and have a go, I`m sure the people of Hampshire would take great delight in seeing you throwing a dead pheasant for them while they throw balls for their dogs
Just one tip if you are thinking of picking up roadside casualties.
Make sure they are dead!!!
A friend of mine, stopped to pick up a hen bird that had been hit by a car in front of him. Popped it in the back of the car, off he went.
10 minutes later, had to pull over and release a very confused pheasant that had apparently just been stunned!! And was flapping around the car trying to make an escape.
Born and raised in Mortlake (SW14) a townie through and through. I spent all my formative years taking in and caring for all sorts of injured animals in a shed on the allotment!! When I had my first Weimaraner and all these dead animals kept being brought to me I was horrified.
I still can't believe what I get up to now but I am completely integrated into the countryside, so much so that when there was a discussion going on round the beaters table at lunchtime the other day running down townies and I tried to step in they all thought I was joking ! No one would believe that I not only was a Townie but a Londoner as well .
My final step was just last week when I decided to skin and prepare a pheasant to eat myself (up to know I have always conned someone into doing it for me), but I finally decided it was about time I actually did the whole job myself. My dad would be so proud of me .
