Casper and Jud were taken with a Sigma 70-300, the old pic of Flynn was in my Ixus days.
I've been thinking about buying a Tamron 18-200, which would give me a bit more flexibility as an all round lens.
Any thoughts Helen??

Andrew – Lovely photographs. It must have been nice to have the link back to your old friend Flynn.

It's one of the things that fascinates me about breeding John, seeing certains traits, good and bad, being passed down.
I must admit it's why I said I got quite emotional watching Casper work, he reminded me so much of his dad, now he has matured physically
It's even more apt at the moment, as I'm just about to to take a second litter from Ellie, and then later this year, I'm planning a litter from Charlie, Flynns daughter. It's one of my pet theories that the grandparents have a great influence, so I'll be looking forward to seeing the first of Flynns grandchildren.
What speed is your sigma lens? Have you got a nikon or canon? I think you should go for a 28 or 50 - 200 for versatility, I know I rarely use the wide angle of my camera but maybe you do. By reducing the zoom amount you will increase in quality. The lenses that I would love to get would be a 18 or 28- 70/80 2.8 and a 70 - 300 2.8. Unfortunately I don't have the money though. My friend is a pro photographer and his Nikon 70-200 2.8 lens is awesome.
I actually have equivalents of a couple of the lenses you mention.
I bought a Nikon D300 with an 18-200 lens, for the flexibility you mention. It is flexible, but when you have said that you’ve said it all. OK at best would be my summing up. It is light weight and some of the shots I have posted up from shoot days have been taken with it. I have taken pictures in the same day which include zooming in on a retrieve, to a line up of the guns and beaters at the end of the day. I’m sure Helen is correct in saying that less zoom range would give better quality.
Last year my wife and I bought a Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR lens for each other, for our 25th wedding anniversary. I think it is a near equivalent to the Canon EF? It’s a superb lens, not just the speed but the optical quality. My Black Dog Syndrome pics were taken with it, also Honey doing her fox red impression, but none of my shoot day pics and there’s the problem. It weighs a ton and is very bulky, so it can practically only be used for set-up shots or when you are concentrating on photography, but it would be impossible to take it along on a shoot day, unless you were the shoot photographer.
It also rather overwhelms a small camera body, so I have fitted an extra battery pack to give me a higher shot / sec rate and balance things up a bit, which makes it even heavier, but better to handle.
Lens choice is such a compromise. Hope the above helps.
When Lee Beel came out on the Grouse moor with me, he had his backpack full of gear, including his trusty 70-200 EF 2.8, and he got some lovely shots, including Indys Calendar shot, with it. But they were nearly all set up, or he was just concentrating on taking pictures. The times when I use my camera, I'm out training, or shooting, or picking up.
You are dead right, a lens like that would be fantastic for those type of shots, but for someone like me, whose camera stays in his game bag, or in his shooting vest, and is part of the day, then a lightweight (ish), lens like my Sigma, seems to do a good enough job.
There are times, like when I went out early one cold morning with the intention of taking pictures, that a quality lens would have been a real advantage. Those days are few and far between, and while they remain so, I can't really see me spending the money to get the EF lens.
Silversnipe - that is a fantastic shot - much better than I ever hope to achieve - you clearly know when to press the shutter - I always press too late!!
