Stupid question I know, but HPR stands for Hunt, Point and Retrieve, right? So that means a lab is a HPR breed?
Only I've found a HPR club that offers gundog training at a reasonable distance from me but on their site they talk about Italian Spinones, Weimerars (sp), basically all continental breeds and no mention of a lab?
Does this mean a lab wouldn't be suitable for an HPR club?
Thanks Jill and Helen, I am in such a muddle with all this. All I want to do is bring out Cadbury's retrieving side and get him doing the job a lab is supposed to do and it seems such a minefield
I'm having such trouble finding suitable classes, I really need something more than a one-off class, because I am so inexperienced. But either the clubs are too far away or they run the classes at times that clash with the other things I do.
I'm starting to think I'll have to give up the idea, which is why I was broadening the field and saw this HPR club.
Oh well, something will probably come up.
Edited to add Helen's name (forgot to put it in first time, sorry )
An HPR is a dog that is supposed to do everything.
Although in my experience their strengths tend to follow the acronym. They all usually hunt well, some more staunch on point than others, retrieving can be good, or non existent.
The continental breeds are intended to range over wide areas where game is sparse, once they have located game, they hold it on point, then flush on command, once the handler is in position to take the shot.
I have shot over good HPR's several times, and it's a great experience.
But getting back to your original question, no a labrador would not usually be welcome, however I do know of one HPR training group that allow all breeds in the puppy classes, as the basic training is the same. So it might be worth a call.
Whereabouts in the country are you Chocice? As someone may know of suitable classes for you.
Andrew
PS Labradash, proper working Labs can hunt as well as any dog, not just "after a fashion" I have also known them point as well, indeed in the US they do have pointing Labradors.
