Chester and I have been working very hard lately as I am planning on doing grades 2 and 3 this year!! Little does Chester know!
Me being me I did the basics, got over excited, and moved on far too quickly.. and left all the basics behind which had tripped us up!
So, all directions and fancy stuff stopped until basics are 100%.. so back to basics is where we are staying until they are inprinted on his brain!
A little vid of a few retrieves out training, there is only so much I can set up out on my own, but here are a few, far from perfect, so please don't laugh
Ruby and I are signed up for beginner retrieving classes in Feb, sounds like fun! I've only ever trained a retrieve for the obedience ring so this is either going to go well or horribly wrong!
Aww he looks nice and steady Suzy and I he has a lovely patient hold until you go to take the dummy - well done
(I am quietly jealous of both the above as Basil is less than steady when heeling with a dummy in the vicinity)
I thought they were very good retrieves. Good pace going out and coming back, dropped the dummy on one, but thats not a bad thing means he has a soft mouth which is good. I think you probably want to look for a bit more cover, to move him on to the next stage. Nice looking dog.
Thanks all, been training very hard lately. He does have a habit of dropping near me on the occasion, but am doing the walking back and making him come to me, which seems to work.
As for cover, thats another thing I haven't managed to do a lot of, as places to train on around where I am are very limited.
Shall keep going. Will try and get OH to come out with us more so we can do more blind retreives, its hard when always out on our own, as can't set things up properly.. need a helper! (dummy thrower! flask holder! camera holder!)
His steadyness is getting better as he is getting older (18 months now) but still sometimes a bum tucking livewire

When you send you dog out for a retrieve, just throw a dummy out in the opposite direction, when your dog comes in to you walk away from where you the blind is. If you can get a helper it is better, as the dog will focus on you at present, if you have a helper making some noise the dog will focus in front which is what you want for retrieving.
