I’ve volunteered to run a friend’s dog in a Veteran test later in the year – purely for the experience. He’s 10 years old but has only been doing gundog training for a couple of years and so although he is coming on really well he doesn’t have the experience of a retired competition dog of the same age.
I haven’t watched any Veteran tests and wondered if anyone on here has, or even entered any before? What should I expect? Will we be out of our depth?
Both the NDNH tests I did at the end of last year had Veteran Tests running alongside them, and were very similar as I was running with the Veterans being a late entry.
Which club is running it, Neil?

Neil, clubs vary so much what and how they run them. Generally speaking I agree that generally they are picthed at 'stiff Novice' level or Intermediate but I must admit entry is usally very small so over the last three years at the KSS I downgraded ours in difficulty to be run over the same tests as a normal Novice.
The KSS although not run by me had its tested scheduled by me for next year and its DUE to be a Novice/Veteran again.
Its unusual for them to be picthed at NDNH level BUT there are generally no jumps, few if any doubles and no long long swims in recognisation that these are all dogs over 8 years of age, possibly anything up to 12/13.
They used to be consistantly when i ran in them with Dylan run pretty much only with Intermediates or at Intermediate level. So be aware of that tradition, but I think so few clubs RUN intermediates now that they find it easier to schedule them generally with Novices because they ALL run one or more of those.
Guildford run an Intermediate with a Veteran ove the same tests. UGS Kent I think it is run one with a NDNH but the tests are harder than for the NDNH tests.
But then one dogs 'harder' is another dogs specialist subject so you can never tell
