Sorry MODS, if this is in the wrong section or not allowed.Im new here. I have a golden lab called Jake. He is 9 years old and a retired drug dog. I got him 6 months ago when his handler was injured at work and retired but due to his age he was not able to re handled so I took him in as a pet to keep my other lab company. However my managers have now decided I cannot take him to work with me as he is retired!! Typical do gooders!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
So I am looking for a retirenmnt home for him as its not fair leaving him in the house while im working. He is a big lad and may be a little over weight but a very gentle giant. He gets on well with other dogs but not cats and I will bring to to anywhere in the UK where he can have a good time for the rest of his life. I am based in Chester.
It is not a case that now I have a new dog I don't want him I really do love him to bits but its not fair leaving him in the house he deserves better.
If anyone can help can you email me (deleted by Mod so you don't get random people contacting you)
Stefan sorry to hear this for you and your boy. Would the drug detection folks not want him back to rehome as they probably get requests for retrired/failed dogs all the time...? Its such a short time since he was with them personally I reckon they would be my first telephone call and speak to whoever dealt with me when I got him 6 months ago.... If they say 'not my problem, mate' then fair enough but I reckon they will be pleased to help you.

I work another Lab Explo Detection and also a Springer Drug dog. The handler who had him retired on medical grounds and has gone to live abroad. So initally they was going to try and send him to a rescue but been an animal lover I saw the picture up in the office and agreed to take him, I had no idea then I was to be given another dog and that they would be a problem me taking him to work with me. Even though he is retired he coulndnt stand at the airport all day but I still do a bit of training with him. But now I have been told that his licence has expired so cannot have him travel in my works car and cannot bring him with me. Its typical of the service once a dog retires its down to the handler to sort them out! He is a lovely lad and it will break my heart because I have bonded with him but I just want whats best for him. None of our managers are animal lovers they are more like politicians!
Right so you work where he came to you from? Sorry I'm a bit thick I didn't pick that up. And they don't have any real policies about if an animal fails or retires other than using rescue? Am I understanding that correctly, Stefan?

Yes if animals fail they normally have lists of people who are looking for young dogs, but normally if a dog retires it is the handlers responsibility to keep or rehome them. If they are still a young dog they would re issue him to a new handler.
Stefan, could you contact LRRS- Labrador Retriever Rescue, not sure what area you would fall in, but tel 02084081214 is the south, am sure she would put you in touch with someone who could help.
Thanks for this I will gove them a call it is really breaking my heart having t rehome him because he is such a lovely lad but its not fair him been stuck in the house all day. I would really like him to go somewhere where I could keep in contact just so I know he is ok
